The Department of Neurosurgery has an opening for a full time Senior Professional Research Assistant (Laboratory Manager) for a basic science lab interested in the study of epilepsy. Both human tissue and animal models will be used in this laboratory. The Senior PRA will assist in submission, approval, and maintenance of the Institutional Review Board (IRB) and Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) protocols as well as consent patients' families to participate in the study. The position will order and track animals and maintain the mouse colony for the laboratory. The Senior PRA will obtain tissue from the operating room and prepare it for experiments, create stock solutions for histology and electrophysiology, perform immunohistochemistry on fixed brain tissue from mice and humans, and assist with brain slice culture maintenance. The position will also be responsible for ordering laboratory supplies and animals and maintaining a clean and orderly lab environment. Duties may also include: • Performing rodent surgeries such as injections of convulsants or viruses or implantation of EEG electrodes. • Analyzing data such as from EEG • Light/confocal microscopy • Helping with slicing of brain tissue (mouse and/or human) for physiology • assisting with brain slice culture preparation
PLEASE NOTE: Candidates will be responsible for travel expenses related to the interview process and any relocation expenses.

Position requires master's degree in biological science or a related field
Experience with neuroscience, immunohistochemistry, brain slicing (fresh and/or fixed tissue), and rodent surgeries. An interest in the application of science to medicine would be an added bonus.
Applicants must have a passion for science and must be able to work well independently, given that the PI is 50% clinical. However, a successful candidate must also be able to integrate well into a team, have great organizational and interpersonal skills, great attention to detail, and work with colleagues and patients in a confidential and professional manner. Excellent computer skills such as Microsoft Office programs (i.e. Excel, Word, PowerPoint) are essential.
