Postdoctoral Research Scholar

Job description

Position Number: 00106507

Essential Job Duties: Gene regulatory networks (GRNs), complex webs of genetic interactions, are hypothesized to explain emergent properties of developing tissues, such as the robustness and sharpness of gene expression. However, hypotheses of how these properties emerge from specific GRN motifs are difficult to verify, partly due to the high degree of complexity found in native GRNs. To overcome this difficulty, an alternative approach is proposed in which synthetic GRNs are designed to directly test these hypotheses. The purpose of the postdoctoral position is to construct a series of synthetic gene regulatory networks and test their behavior in the early Drosophila embryo. This will entail network design, plasmid cloning, confocal microscopy, image analysis, and Drosophila embryology. The end goal will be to test for emergent behavior of these networks, such as the robustness, sharpness/precision, and scale invariance observed in native signaling systems.

Minimum Education/Experience:

Department Required Skills: Ph.D. in biochemistry, molecular biology, microbiology, chemical engineering, or related field. Previous experimental experience with plasmid cloning and Drosophila embryogenesis is encouraged. Previous experience analyzing mechanistic models of signaling networks is optional.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education: Postdoctoral scholars with zero to two years of experience invited to apply.

Necessary Licenses and Certifications: N/A
