Duties: The Gene Therapy Program (GTP) is entering a new era of unprecedented opportunity with the great potential to reshape the face of medicine as we know it. Our discoveries have set the stage for successful treatments and possibly even cures for devastating genetic diseases.

The laboratory of Dr. Jim Wilson, at GTP of the University of Pennsylvania, has been a leader in the development of innovative vector technology for close to three decades. We have emerged as the 'go-to' organization for public and private partners, who want to participate in the gene therapy space. Currently, we are positioned to lead another round of vector innovation and establish pre-clinical and clinical proof-of-concept in therapeutic applications of in-vivo genome editing.

We are currently looking for an Executive Director of Business Development to support the growth of GTP and ensure the continuation of research and services in the study of Gene Therapy.

As the Executive Director of Business Development, you will play a critical role as the Center expands its reach and services. Reporting to the Principal Investigator (PI) of GTP, you will be charged with the development of GTP's funding opportunities with existing and new sources. You will partner closely with the ED to chart GTP's future growth and strategic response to an ever-increasing demand for GTP's services.

Keeping well informed and abreast of new developments essential for GTP, you will communicate the philosophy, mission, and values of GTP to major stakeholders, including funding agencies. Identify funding opportunities, foster existing relationships with funding institutions, form new and expand upon the existing relationships. As part of your efforts, you will increase and further the diversity of GTP funding. Partnering with the PI, you will formulate and implement strategies for GTP growth, identify new partnership & license opportunities, negotiate deal structure, and oversee execution of sponsored research agreements. You will collaborate with all other functional areas within the organization and with other University Offices, including Development, Corporate Relationships, and others.

Essential Duties:
* Identify, set up, and manage strategic relationships and alliances with outside institutions; leverage GTP Technology, and Intellectual Property portfolios; and expand/diversify GTP funding.

* Liaise with all functional areas within GTP organization, and University Offices.

* Negotiate deal structure and oversee execution of sponsored research agreements from inception to completion

* Promote GTP technology portfolio through presentations at key scientific and business meetings

Qualifications: The minimum of a Bachelor's degree in Life Sciences and 10 years of experience in business development including 6 years of senior leadership experience in the industry setting, or an equivalent combination of education and work related experience are required. MBA preferred. Experience in building and managing relationships with stakeholders, leading multidisciplinary teams, formulating organization wide strategies. Experience with licensing, joint venture, industry/university alliances, start-ups, and angel investment in Life Sciences space. Ability to work with all levels within the organization from senior management to technicians. Ability to work independently, leading to the introduction of new capabilities to a growing organization. Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills are critical.
Willingness to travel 30% of the time. Valid driver's license and clean driving record required.
