Section I:  Scope

Working under the Associate Director for the Center for Academic Success, the English Language Specialist directly supports English language learners at Manhattan College from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds. The English Language Specialist will primarily meet one-on-one with students (during both day and evening hours) seeking support with their English language skills. The Specialist will assess language deficiencies, develop and implement a personalized learning plan, and track student progress over time. In addition, the Specialist’s duties include but are not limited to one-on-one instruction, small group instruction, writing tutor training and development, and the promotion of language support services.  

 

Section II:  Responsibilities

Reports to:  Associate Director, Center for Academic Success 

Supervises:  n/a

Responsibilities:  

    • Assess the English language needs of individual students, develop personalized learning goals and plans, and facilitate weekly one-on-one or small group tutorial sessions
    • Assist students in their development of cultural competency and appropriation 
    • Track and monitor student attendance and progress
    • Collaborate with the Center for Academic Staff on programmatic initiatives
    • Facilitate tutor training workshops on common ESL challenges including but not limited to verb/adjective/article/preposition usage, sentence structure, word choice, idiomatic expressions and source documentation
    • Represent the Center for Academic Success at international student orientations

  Section III:  Qualifications   Qualifications

  • Preferred Qualifications

    • Experience working with undergraduate and/or graduate international students
    • At least three years of professional experience teaching or tutoring English language learners at the college level
    • Knowledge of best practices in teaching language and student learning and development

    Required Qualifications

    • Master’s degree in Linguistics, English, or closely related field
    • At least one-year experience teaching or tutoring English language learners
    • Experience working with diverse student populations
    • Willingness to utilize technology to facilitate and enhance student learning experiences
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
