I. JOB OVERVIEW

Job Description Summary:

The Division of Development and Alumni Relations (DAR) is seeking an Assistant Director of Development for Principal Gifts. DAR is responsible for leading the university's alumni and fundraising efforts and seeks to promote a culture of philanthropy throughout the university community, including alumni, students, parents, faculty, staff, corporations and foundations, patients and other friends. Our goal is to advance GWUs mission of excellence in education, research, scholarship, and patient care.

Reporting to the Assistant Vice President, Principal Gifts, the Assistant Director of Development for Principal Gifts plays an integral role in directly supporting the university-wide principal gifts program and helping to ensure that efforts across the university and division, relative to GW's top prospects, are coordinated. This position works closely with key internal stakeholders and occasionally with high-level external stakeholders, and requires a high level of judgement, attention to detail, customer service, organization, and ability to multi-task and prioritize. The Assistant Director should be able to work with a high degree of independence and the ability to learn quickly and accurately. The Assistant Director works closely with the Assistant Vice President of Development, Principal Gifts to help manage and maintain GW's overarching top prospect strategy. The position requires a thorough understanding of donor and prospect backgrounds and strategic movement, and ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality. The Assistant Director also supports presidential strategy and coordination for top prospects on behalf of DAR. Excellent communication and editing skills, both written and oral are necessary. A strong understanding of event and meeting planning is preferred.

Job Duties:

Maintain and manage the Presidential prospect portfolio, ensuring strategies are accurate, timely and complete. Track, manage, and document presidential-DAR related activity in coordination with appropriate gift officers and Research and Relationship Management. Manage DAR presidential activity calendar and facilitate DAR presidential strategy meetings.
Liaise with the Office of the President on all DAR-related logistics including scheduling, submission and oversight for pipeline of presidential meeting and event requests, provision of briefing and other relevant materials, and coordination of presidential stewardship communication to donors. Handle approval requests of routine, non-personalized communications.

Manage the briefing and de-briefing processes for DAR events and meetings where the president is present, inclusive of high-level editing and provision of content for briefings and presidential talking points as needed. Help to facilitate related research requests.

Write and administer protocol, training materials, style guides, templates, and processes to inform DAR staff on best practices for working with university administration.

Provide high-level support to the Assistant Vice President, Principal Gifts relative to the university-wide principal prospect pool and strategy and work closely with Research and Relationship Management (RRM) and Donor Relations to ensure division-wide principal strategy and donor life cycle movement is accurate, in line with direction from the AVP, Principal Gifts. Attend RRM-conducted principal-level strategy and pipeline conversations with schools, units and central teams. In collaboration with RRM, provide appropriate reports to the AVP Principal Gifts for presidential and principal prospects. Assist AVP, Principal Gifts with prospect strategy and solicitation proposals, with opportunity to partner with AVP in external donor meetings when appropriate. Serve as a team member for select prospects and proposals.

Work closely with Donor Relations, Communications, and External Relations to create and implement customized annual stewardship plans, events, letters, outreach, and reports for principal and presidential donors, as part of the donor lifecycle process and portfolio management

Assist in management of the Principal Gifts Network through coordination of meetings, agendas items, and notes. Oversight of meeting outcomes in partnership with Assistant Vice President, Principal Gifts and RRM.

Performs other work related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
