Job Description:

The State University of New York at Fredonia invites applications for a full-time, 10-month, Admissions Counselor (Admissions Assistant SL2) beginning fall 2017. This position offers a competitive salary and a comprehensive benefits package including an annual location stipend as contractually negotiated (currently $3,026 annually).

This position will be responsible for managing a recruitment territory of New York City to include the following counties Kings, Richmond, Bronx, Manhattan, and Staten Island. Travel can also include areas outside of Metro NYC area as needed. Working closely with the Associate Director of Admissions, this person will plan and execute strategies to meet enrollment goals while serving prospective students through the college search process. This person will represent Fredonia at various student recruitment events and will be expected to build relationships with prospective students and families, high school guidance counselors, community based organization leaders, independent college counselors and others involved in the college search process while also cultivating an active network of local alumni to leverage in recruitment activities.

Reporting to the Associate Director of Recruitment, the successful candidate will:

  • Travel to designated recruitment area including high school visits, college fairs and receptions;
  • Review applications for admissions;
  • Follow-up with prospective students;
  • Organize on-campus events for students, parents and high school counselors;
  • Host daily informational sessions for prospective students;
  • Participate in committees and provide service to the department, college, university, and profession;
  • Be aware of, understand, and follow all university policies;
  • Completes routine reports related to recruitment, projections, travel, special programs, and/or expense reports;
  • Work closely with SUNY NYC Welcome Center and its staff to plan programs, recruitment travel, and other outreach efforts,
  • Confer regularly with supervisor and admissions staff to plan, coordinate and evaluate activities and exchange information.
  • Participate in committees and provide service to the department, college, university, and profession;
  • Be aware of, understand, and follow all university policies.



  • Must reside within or be willing to relocate to the Metro NYC region defined as Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, Bronx, or Staten Island;
  • Bachelor's Degree in related field;
  • Strong presentation skills;
  • Since this position requires travel up to 60+ miles, a valid drivers license and the ability to travel long distances, or the equivalent with reasonable accommodation, is required
  • Previous University admissions experience;
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time;
  • Ability to work on weekends and nights;
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office;
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize, take initiative and work well with others in a team environment;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to work effectively, and in a collegial and professional manner, with students, faculty, and staff;
  • Presentation and public speaking skills;
  • The ability to multi-task, meet goals and deadlines;
  • Demonstrated commitment and ability to work with a diverse group of students, faculty, staff and constituents in support of campus and department mission;
  • Demonstrated commitment to the university, division, and profession.


  • Master's degree;
  • Knowledge of admissions software (i.e. Banner, OnBase, etc.);
  • Knowledge of Fredonia;
  • Interest in, and commitment to, community engagement.

This is a full-time, term appointed, tenure track position beginning Fall 2017.
