The Opportunity

Houston Community College System (HCCS) --- a unified system of academic college education, career and technical education, adult education, distance learning, customized business / industry instruction with on-site workforce training to advance the business community, and international educational partnerships --- is seeking an Associate Dean Student Engagement and Success for this expansive college system. Chosen leader will advance the institution's proud tradition of excellence in academics, student life, and community service.

Reporting to the Dean of Student Success, this position will assist the Dean and College President in coordinating all facets of the college's student engagement and retention programs. The Associate Dean will provide leadership in the planning, implementation and evaluation of a comprehensive student support services program designed to enhance the student experience at the College. The Associate Dean will provide leadership and oversight to College Orientation Programs, Advising, Counseling, Career and Transfer Services, Internship and Job Placement Services and Student Life. The Associate Dean will provide strong educational, social, and leadership development oriented co-curricular programs and activities to enhance student learning. Maintain a visible presence on campus and is actively engaged in creating and developing student life events. Support the development and maintenance of student-driven clubs and organizations and advocates on behalf of student leaders and clubs.

This executive is responsible for providing leadership and oversight for Advisement, Counseling, Career and Transfer Services, Internship and Job Placement, Student Life, Recreational Sports, Judicial Affairs and New Student Orientation; building partnerships with Academic Affairs, the Centers of Excellence, Workforce Development, and community-based organizations to develop, organize, and implement strategies to promote student retention and success; providing key leadership in the implementation of engagement and retention efforts designed to enhance the student experience; supervising the management of administrative processes including budget preparation and oversight, payroll, personnel, and purchasing; monitoring the operational budgets in the various departments assigned to this position to ensure efficient and effective fiscal management of College funds; assisting in coordinating campus-based Student Activities, Recreational Sports and Minority Male Mentoring efforts in collaborating with the district staff to promote student success. In addition, the Associate Dean is responsible for collaborating with the Centers of Excellence to engage students in workforce development programs and facilitating the planning of staff and program training activities to promote professional development and innovative engagement opportunities.

Responsible for the design, execution and effectiveness of a system of internal controls which provides reasonable assurance that operations are effectives and efficient, assets are safeguarded, financial information is reliable and compliant with applicable law, regulation, policies and procedures.

Manages Human Resources activities for direct reports in regards to: recruiting and selection; hiring and termination, training, development, mentoring, counseling, and performance evaluations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
  1. Provide leadership and oversight for Advisement, Counseling, Career and Transfer Services, Internship and Job Placement, Student Life, Recreational Sports, Judicial Affairs and New Student Orientation;
  2. Build partnerships with Academic Affairs, the Centers of Excellence, Workforce Development, and community-based organizations to develop, organize, and implement strategies to promote student retention and success;
  3. Develop in collaboration with the Office of Institutional Research assessment tools that keeps track of student's progress and engagement in the student support services areas;
  4. Provide key leadership in the implementation of engagement and retention efforts designed to enhance the student experience;
  5. Assist in Coordinating campus-based Student Activities, Recreational Sports and Minority Male Mentoring efforts in collaboration with the district staff to promote student success;
  6. Supervise the management of administrative processes including budget preparation and oversight, payroll, personnel, and purchasing. Also monitor the operational budgets in the various departments assigned to this position to ensure efficient and effective fiscal management of College funds;
  7. Promote the ultimate student experience by establishing strategies and benchmarks to increase persistence, retention and academic success. This includes developing quantitative and qualitative metrics to assess student success strategies;
  8. Collaborate with the Centers of Excellence to engage students in workforce development programs associated with that particular Center of Excellence; and
  9. Facilitate the planning of staff and program training activities to promote professional development and innovative engagement opportunities.


QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION

Master's degree in Counseling, Higher Education Administration, or related field required.

EXPERIENCE

Five (5) years related administrative experience with supervisory responsibilities required, preferably in a related position in an institution of higher education. Experience in academic advisement as well as developing and implementing student success strategies that address the needs of a diverse student population. Prior experience in using student management system tools.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  1. Knowledgeable in the enforcement of all local, state and federal statutory requirements pertaining to higher education;
  2. Ability to write grants to develop and expand student services programs;
  3. Ability to coach and mentor staff towards optimal performance;
  4. Excellent oral and written communication skills with ability to effectively articulate the mission and vision of Houston Community College; and
  5. Excellent team building skills.
