Primary Function of Organization Unit: The Patisaul lab seeks to understand how early life exposures to environmental chemicals may impact the developing brain and behaviors. We are particularly interested in sex differences, sex-specific vulnerabilities, and neuroendocrine systems coordinating social behavior. Our interdisciplinary program involves the neurosciences, endocrinology and toxicology. Our laboratory supports undergraduate and graduate research, and has substantial extramural support to develop and maintain our integrative research program. We also routinely engage in interdisciplinary research and training programs with other faculty across the NCSU campus and throughout the NC Research Triangle.

Essential Job Duties: We are seeking a Research Assistant to join a dynamic and diverse laboratory dedicated to understanding how environmental chemicals may impact the developing brain. This includes use of a variety of rodent models such as non-traditional organisms and work in the realm of of neuroendocrinology, toxicology and genetics. Comprised of undergraduate and graduate students, a research manager and the PI, our team is looking to hire a self-motivated, collaborative, and dedicated individual to help coordinate activities associated with a two new extramural grants, and manage multiple projects simultaneously. The Research Assistant will be expected to independently design and execute critical aspects of these projects including all animal-related work from breeding to tissue harvesting. The Research Assistant will also be expected to work collaboratively with the PI and graduate students to support, develop, design, and execute all day to day research activities including scheduling of key experiments, development and perfection of fundamental techniques, and procurement of key resources. Critically, the capacity to independently formulate research methods and suggest options for improving quality, including troubleshooting when needed, is required. Additional duties/tasks will include routine laboratory upkeep and maintenance including ordering and the preparation of stock reagents. Drafting and coordinating experiments in collaboration with the research manager and PI is also required. Additional duties will include conduct of animal research including behavioral experiments, necropsy, tissue histology, PCR, RNAseq, LCM, and basic microscopy work. Supervision and training of undergraduates is expected along with collaborative efforts with the graduate students. Accordingly, the Research Assistant will serve as a co-author on all relevant publications and contribute to the drafting and submission of manuscripts. Coordination of data management practices, including long term archiving and data QA/QC is also required.

Minimum Education/Experience: Master's degree in a relevant discipline, or Bachelor's and two or more years of relevant experience in a research laboratory, or relevant independent experience and education in the field of genetics, neuroscience, toxicology and/or behavior.

Department Required Skills: The successful candidate for this position will be able to coordinate activities across multiple labs and maintain lab notebooks, computer records and other essential documents. Must be willing to work as part of a team but also take on a leadership role as needed.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education: Experience with GLP/GPC guidelines and RNAseq is considered particularly desirable.
