The General Merchandise Buyer maintains the merchandise division of the Bookstore, including; managing the general merchandise inventory sold at all bookstore locations by selecting and purchasing merchandise items, tracking sales history, determining mark-downs, and assisting with the coordination of sales and events. This position reports to the Bookstore Manager.
Responsibilities:

Maintain general merchandise items in the POS system which includes entering new items, tracking sales history, determining re-order quantities, vendor, and placing orders.

Determine new items as well as sales events and promotions, mark downs and clearance of general merchandise items. Responsible for building product assortments, cross-merchandising between department, and visual merchandising including planning of store sales floor layouts.

Manage general merchandise inventory and delegate merchandise transferred between Bookstore locations.

Stay current on trends in school supplies, apparel, gift and impulse items, software and technology; stock and display electronics available for sale, assist customers with electronics, software questions, and special orders.

Develop and maintain professional relationships and communication with vendor and distributor representatives as well as Waubonsee staff in order to ensure the Bookstore purchases items that reflect Waubonsee's community culture and needs.

Operate cash register in the sale of materials, refunds and exchanges as needed.

Provide back-up and assist students, staff, etc. at Customer Service counter including entering student A/R vouchers when needed.

Assist with year-end physical inventory.

Work effectively with other Bookstore staff at all campus locations as a part of the Bookstore team.

Position Qualifications: Associate's degree required. Bachelor's degree preferred.

Two years progressively responsible experience in retail; specifically in inventory management, purchasing, visual merchandising, computer and point of sale systems, sales, and customer service. Branding, social media, and event planning experience preferred.

Ability to communicate effectively with and relate to all levels of college faculty, staff, and
student populations.

Ability to move or handle merchandise throughout the store generally weighing 0–50 pounds.

Computer skills including use of Microsoft Office Software programs required.

Valid Illinois driver license and ability to travel between all Waubonsee Community College campuses
as needed.

Ability to work varied hours/days as business dictates.

Willingness and ability to travel to educational seminars and trade shows required.
