Job Description

The School of Communication and Media at Montclair State University invites applications for a tenure track assistant/associate professor position in Public Relations to begin September 1, 2018.

Responsibilities: This position includes teaching, research, and service responsibilities in support of the School's ambitious mission. The candidate hired for this position will teach introductory and advanced courses in the undergraduate program in public relations and the graduate program in public and organizational relations. The successful candidate will also have a defined research agenda and demonstrated potential for ongoing research productivity. Special consideration will be given to candidates whose areas of specialization include social media analytics and/or strategic management, which complement current strengths and initiatives of the School.

The successful candidate will work closely with students and guide activities of the School's PRSSA Chapter and help establish a productive student-run PR firm. We seek individuals with a strong commitment to fostering relationships with PR practitioners, media partners, and community organizations in the region to develop strategic initiatives, projects, and new research directions for the School. Professional experience in the public relations industry will be considered a plus.

The School of Communication and Media has just moved into its new 105,000 square foot building, complete with state-of-the art production, teaching, and research facilities, and is poised for remarkable success and growth. The School has over 800 majors in undergraduate tracks that include public relations, communication studies, communication and media arts, filmmaking, journalism, and television and digital media. The School also offers an M.A. degree in Public & Organizational Relations. Faculty work closely with students to provide guidance for organized academic, project-based, and entrepreneurial activities through the PRSSA Chapter, the Lambda Pi Eta Chapter, the Montclarion newspaper, the radio station (WMSC-FM),, the Dumont Television Center, and a thriving Internship program that connects students to a vast network of placements, including the outstanding opportunities throughout the greater New York City metropolitan area.

Qualifications & Requirements

A Ph.D. in the field of public relations or communication and media (all degree requirements must be completed by August 1, 2018). Demonstrated record of teaching excellence, an active and promising research agenda, commitment to meaningful service, and ability to work collaboratively. The faculty member will also have some service responsibilities that may include advising and mentoring of students, supervising student interns, curriculum development, and participation in other initiatives in the School of Communication and Media and throughout the University.
