Job Description

The John J. Cali School of Music of Montclair State University seeks a full-time, tenure-track faculty member in the area of music therapy. The responsibilities of the position include teaching undergraduate and graduate music therapy coursework, supervising music therapy clinical training, advising students, maintaining scholarly activities (research, writing, etc.), and participating in academic service on school, college, and university levels. Participation in student recruitment and program development (with possible program coordination responsibilities) is also expected.

Qualifications & Requirements

Qualifications include a PhD or equivalent doctoral-level degree in music therapy or related discipline, a minimum of three years full-time (or the equivalent) clinical music therapy experience, strong musicianship (with an orientation to a cultural diversity of music), evidence of exemplary academic pedagogical skills and experience providing innovative university-level instruction, a record of academic scholarship (research, writing, etc.), and active engagement in service to the profession of music therapy on local, regional, national, and/or international levels. Completion of training in one or more models of advanced music therapy practice (Creative Music Therapy/Nordoff-Robbins, Guided Imagery and Music/Bonny Method, Analytical Music Therapy/Priestley Model, etc.), as well as familiarity incorporating music-based technology into music therapy clinical work, teaching, and/or research, are preferred.

The music therapy program at Montclair State University offers bachelor's and master's degrees in music therapy, and is among the oldest in the world (established in 1970), and remains the only music academic therapy program in the state of New Jersey. Rooted in the music-centered environment of the John J. Cali School of Music, its location within the greater New York metropolitan area provides students and faculty with opportunities to engage in the rich, vibrant, artistic culture of the region, and to work with a diverse community of music therapy clinicians within close proximity. The music therapy program is approved by the American Music Therapy Association (AMTA), within a School of Music accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM).
