IT Administrator (Systems Engineer)

General Description of Position:

This position will serve as a member of one or more System Engineering teams responsible for engineering and third-level support of Window Systems, Desktop Virtualization, and Application Virtualization/BYOD. The VDI engineer will support VDI infrastructure servers, thin clients, PCs and other supporting equipment for the university computing labs and tech classrooms. This position is responsible for engineering, implementation, best practices, right sizing, troubleshooting and delivery. Installation, maintenance, upgrades and security compliance are all critical to VDI service delivery. This position coordinates with Tier 1 and Tier 2 support and operations, and performs on-call duties as needed.

This position will serve as a member of one or more teams responsible for Windows Systems and Desktop Virtualization. The responsibilities in each of these domains include:

1. Windows Systems Engineering:

  • Active Directory architecture and management
  • MS-SQL Server deployment & troubleshooting
  • Security Policy compliance/host based firewall management
  • Scripting and Automation
  • Server deployment and lifecycle management
  • Data classification
  • Application deployment and lifecycle management
  • Data structure design and management
  • Monitoring
  • Document system configuration and maintenance

2. Desktop and Application Virtualization:

  • VDI infrastructure management, including hardware, software, desktop and server operating systems support
  • Identification of system requirements for operations and security, works with other engineers and staff to develop designs and integrate components
  • Development of VDI system architecture
  • Key contributor to operations, engineering, security and system integration tasks
  • Key contributor in technical testing, deployments and support of VDI infrastructure
  • Management and tuning of platforms to ensure expected availability and performance levels
  • Next generation VDI architecture design, and implementation of pilot to support BYOD

Other responsibilities:

  • Participate in professional training in furtherance of certification in line with team duties and responsibilities
  • Provide cross training to team members as needed to keep team up-to-date on systems and servers
  • Such other duties as may be required
Required Minimum Qualifications:
  • Associate Degree (or work equivalent)
  • Experience with VDI Assessment Tools such as Liquidware Stratusphere
  • Experience supporting Windows Server and Desktop operating systems including Windows 7/10, Windows Server 2008/2012/2016.
  • Experience with scripting in VBScript and/or PowerShell
  • Expert hands-on administration experience with VMware tools including ESX, ESXi/vSphere, vCenter, vMotion, DRS, vRealize and other virtualization technologies and concepts

Entry Level:

  • Three years’ experience in at least one of the following engineering domains: Windows Systems/Active Directory and
  • Desktop/Application Virtualization
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience supporting large and complex data center VDI, virtualization, and server computing platforms

Specialist Level:

  • Five years’ experience in at least one of the following engineering domains: Windows Systems/Active Directory and
  • Desktop/Application Virtualization
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience supporting large and complex data center VDI, virtualization, and server computing platforms
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience working with IT systems deployed in higher education
  • Understanding and experience with ITIL processes
  • Experience troubleshooting complex IT issues in interconnected systems

Entry Level:

  • Two years’ experience in at least three of the following engineering domains: Windows Systems/Active Directory and Desktop/Application Virtualization

Specialist Level:

  • Three years’ experience in at least three of the following engineering domains: Windows Systems/Active Directory and Desktop/Application Virtualization
Other Requirements:
  • Demonstrated capability to conduct duties outlined above in one or more domains
  • Ability to track and apportion time across multiple projects and troubleshooting tickets
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Effective communicator (orally and in writing) with non-technical and technical audiences
  • Willingness to certify through examination or other means that requisite knowledge, skills, and experience are possessed in order to maintain or progress in responsibility and salary
  • Position will be on-call in a regular rotation

    $53,515-$85,623

    Entry Level: $53,515 - $61,542

    Specialist Level: $61,543 - $69,569

    Please note: the minimum salary for this position is $53,515. Actual salary will be determined based on the candidate's experience, education, internal equity and departmental funding. Salary offers are typically made between the minimum and midpoint of the salary range. The range indicated includes both the typical hiring range and potential future progression.
