Primary Function of Organization Unit: The Golden LEAF Biomanufacturing Training and Education Center (BTEC) is a unique, cross-disciplinary instructional center that provides educational and training opportunities to develop skilled professionals for the biomanufacturing industry. BTEC's audience includes NCSU students and professionals already involved in biomanufacturing or related industries. BTEC also provides bioprocess development and analytical services to a wide range of customers from academia and industry.
Essential Job Duties: Scientists at BTEC provide support for lab activities associated with NCSU undergraduate/graduate courses and lab activities associated with BTEC's Professional Development Short Course Program. In addition, laboratory managers support projects that are part of BTEC's Bioprocess and Analytical Services Program. The Scientist II position also has responsibility for coordinating activities across multiple labs in a given area (e.g., small-, intermediate-, large-scale areas). Duties and Responsibilities: * Execute processes under BTEC's bioprocess services program including upstream and downstream manufacturing of bioproducts, upstream and downstream bioprocess design, scale up, research and development. * Provide support to projects under BTEC's bioprocess services program; this may include, but it is not limited to, creating production schedules, writing documentation, overseeing raw materials and sample inventory, and communicating effectively with clients. * Support the creation and implementation of BTEC's Phase I GMP production process. * Support active instruction of North Carolina State University undergraduate and graduate students, as well as industry professionals in subject matters related to biomanufacturing. Specific topics include but are not limited to cell culture, recovery and purification operations for biomolecules, cGMP bioprocessing, development of biopharmaceutical processes, and analytical test development and execution. * Provide input on course and process improvements. * Identify equipment-related issues, identify root cause, and make minor repairs/adjustments. * Ensure safety in the laboratories. * Ensure thorough application of GMP in the laboratory during Phase I manufacturing. * Follow documented procedures and policies within the BTEC facility and at the University. * Perform any other tasks/responsibilities assigned by supervisor.
Minimum Education/Experience: * B.S.* in engineering or life science (chemical engineering, biochemistry, chemistry, microbiology, or related discipline). * Five years industrial experience in bioprocessing (process development or manufacturing). * Hands-on experience in downstream bioprocessing, with emphasis in process development, particularly, experience with tangential flow filtration, preparative chromatography (GE Explorer and/or Avant systems), normal flow filtration, centrifugation and homogenization. * Hands-on experience with Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP). *Required degree must be completed prior to start date.
Department Required Skills: * Good written and verbal communication skills, and particularly the ability to present information clearly and concisely in oral and written form. * Ability to conduct multiple projects at the same time in and organized manner. * Good interpersonal skills and the ability to work with different groups within BTEC, clients, interdisciplinary groups, and students from the University and from industry. * Ability to work independently and as a team member. * Ability to adapt to constantly changing projects, priorities, clients and schedules. * Knowledge of laboratory safety and biosafety practices. * Proficiency with Google suite, MS Office suite, specifically MS Word, MS Excel, and PowerPoint.
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education: * M.S.* in engineering or life science (chemical engineering, biochemistry, chemistry, microbiology, or related discipline). * Hands-on experience in upstream bioprocessing, with emphasis in process development. Particularly, experience with mammalian cell culture and disposable bioreactor technologies. * Project management experience that led to successful completion of a project. *Required degree must be completed prior to start date.
