Nurse Practitioner - Clinical Instructor of Neurosurgery (Two Positions)

Required Qualifications: Current NYS RN licensure. Master's degree in Nursing. NYS certification or eligible as an Adult/Family Nurse Practitioner. Two years of nursing experience in neurosurgery, neurology, general surgery, med-surg, emergency medicine or intensive care. NIHSS certification and ACLS certification required upon hire.
Preferred Qualifications: Emergency or intensive care experience highly desirable. DUal certification as Adult and Pediatric NP preferred. Emergency Neurological Life Support (ENLS) certification is highly desirable. Experience performing procedures including lumbar puncture, ventriculostomy, placement of ICP Monitors, VPS taps and placement of lumbar drains.
Responsibilities & Requirements: Under the firection of the Head Nurse Practitioner and attendings, the NPs will join a team of Physician Extenders to cover the neurosurgery service 24/7. They will provide on-site inpatient care and management on general neurosurgery service, cerebrovascular service and neurocritical care unit. Training on nights and will be expected to share night and weekend call with the other Physician Extenders. Duties include 1) providing patient care to neurosurgery patients in the hospital, ER, OR and neurocritical care unit; 2) performing diagnostic and therapeutic procedures such as lumbar puncture, ventriculostomy, and placement of ICP monitors; 3) Coordinate all aspects of inpatient care and discharge planning with nursing and other hospital staff; 4) Develop standards of care and/or care maps for Neurosurgery surgical nursing practice with Nursing Manager for department; 5) Assist nursing staff in assessing patient status, establishing nursing diagnosis and developing nurse care plans; 6) Function in a collegial manner with medical staff and other disciplines; 7) Function as a clinical preceptor for graduate nursing students; 8) Make referral to the healthcare providers and consult for physician on definitive therapy; 9) Identify and participate in the monitoring of Quality Assurance issues; and 10) Develop and present pertinent educational programs to medical nursing staff.
Special Notes: This is a non-tenure track position. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Internal and external search to occur simultaneously. Anticipated Start Date: As soon as possible.
