Instructor and Student Support Specialist

Description of Department/Program:
The departmental roots go back to the turn of the last century when it originally was the Department of Engineering Mathematics. The Department teaches thousands of students and has a major research presence in computational and physical/biological mathematics and the statistical sciences. It has 21 tenured or tenure track faculty. In addition there are 7 full time instructors, more than 70 graduate students including approximately 40 teaching assistants, about 150 applied math majors, 100 minors and a thriving BS-MS program. The Department of Applied Mathematics is one of the leading departments of applied mathematics in the world. In fact, in a recent National Research Ranking, our Department was ranked amongst the top ten in many measures. Our faculty have won numerous awards including: four being named fellows of the Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics, two being named fellows of the American Mathematical Society, two Guggenheim Fellows, American Statistical Association Fellow, Sloan Fellow, and CU-Boulder: Hazel Barnes Prize, Professor of Distinction, winners of numerous CU-Boulder faculty awards, and two distinguished research lecturers.

Overview of Job Duties:
The position will comprise two parts: Applied Math Student Support Specialist (75%) and instructor (25%). The Support Specialist will work closely with Applied Math's Assessment and Placement Coordinator (Silva Chang) to identify mathematically at-risk students. The Support Specialist will, depending on the needs of the students:
*meet individually with them on a weekly or biweekly basis, answer questions and set weekly goals;
*hold small group advising sessions where study skills are discussed and reinforced;
*coordinate with students' academic advisors as needed (for those students needing support outside of the mathematical area);
*hold review sessions as needed;
*track student progress throughout the semester. In all these activities the Applied Math Support Specialist will help students develop a growth mindset. In the fall semester, these duties will revolve primarily around students in APPM 1235, Precalculus for Engineers, and APPM 1350, Calculus 1 for Engineers. In the spring semester, the courses will be APPM 1350 and APPM 1360, Calculus 2 for Engineers. In the summer, the Support Specialist will support students in all of the courses offered by Applied Math.

The primary responsibilities as an instructor will involve teaching two courses each academic year (three courses in the first year in order to become familiar with each course) and coordinate at least one course per year (beginning in the second year).

Minimum Qualifications:
Masters in Applied Math or Mathematics Education or a related field and experience teaching mathematics at the university level.

Preferred Qualifications:
PhD is preferred in Applied Math or Mathematics Education. Preference will be given to candidates who have experience working with students in a mentoring capacity. Preference will also be given to those candidates who demonstrate enthusiasm about modern pedagogical techniques and who desire to stay abreast of pedagogical literature and best practices.
