Plan, implement, and evaluate a model program for children, which is consistent with the principles and practices taught in the College of DuPage Early Childhood Education and Care Program (ECEC). Communicate formally and informally with parents. Coordinate the activities of the practicum students.
Position Title: Child Care Assistant II (P/T), CP1N12252ECEC
Duties of Position:
- In relation to the Early Childhood Education and Care Program, provide an orientation program about the classroom for Early Childhood Education and Care Program students; provide guidance and learning opportunities for practicum students and observers; in cooperation with supervising faculty, individualize instruction for practicum students; conduct daily review and planning meetings with practicum students; assist faculty in weekly seminars for student interns as requested; and in cooperation with supervising faculty, meet with practicum students twice a term to review and evaluate their performance.
- In relation to children enrolled in Early Childhood Center, plan, implement and evaluate a model program for children consistent with principles and practices taught in ECEC classes; plan and implement a model program consistent with Department of Children and Family Services and the National Academy of Early Childhood Programs guidelines; provide a safe and supervised environment for each child in the classroom; use positive guidance techniques as described in the Early Childhood Education and Care Program classes; plan and implement developmentally appropriate experiences for children based upon both individual child and group needs; and keep periodic written observational records of each child (to be determined in cooperation with the Center Director).
- In relation to Program Planning: know Department of Children and Family Services and the National Academy of Early Childhood Program guidelines for child care facilities; know Center policies and procedures for children, parents and staff; prepare daily written plans according to guidelines, for both indoor and outdoor experiences; with the cooperation of other classroom staff, implement a model program curriculum; and maintain daily attendance records.
- In relation to Parents: maintain daily contact with parents as necessary; provide annual progress conference for each child and other parent conferences as needed or requested; participate in Center-Family events; contribute to monthly newsletter and complete other communications as needed (phone calls, notes to parents, etc.); make home visits to each child's home before or close to the child's enrollment date; maintains classroom bulletin boards; and distribute notes, newsletters, etc. to parents.
- In relation to Environment: maintain equipment and facilities in a safe, tidy and clean manner and report needs to the Director; care for plants and animals; recommend the purchase of needed educational materials and other supplies; and complete Early Childhood Center Environmental Support and other as assigned.
- In relation to Professional Standards: maintain the confidentiality of children, families and staff; attend weekly staff meetings and other meetings as required; keep current with professional issues and research; comply with the policies in the Handbook for Classified Personnel; and comply with the policies and standards stated in the Early Childhood Center Staff Handbook.
- Other related duties as assigned.
Experience and Education:
Two to three (2-3) years' previous experience in a childcare center.
Bachelor's Degree in Child Development/Early Childhood Education, or Bachelor's Degree with A.A. in Early Childhood Education or Child Development, CPR & First Aid Certificates.
Two to three (2-3) years' experience in a childcare center with experience supervising students or volunteers.
Master's Degree in Child Development/Early Childhood Education, Food Service Sanitation Certificate.
Equipment & Working Conditions:
Early Childhood Center equipment and appliances both indoors and on the playground. Appliances: Stove, refrigerator, microwave, washer & dryer, dishwasher. Small kitchen appliances: Blender, popcorn popper, electric skillet, mixer, toaster oven, ice shaver, cheese grater and eggbeater. Hand tools: Drill, screwdriver, hammer, pliers, and wrench. VCR and Video camera, audiotape recorder and record player, multi-line telephone and answering machine, laminating machine, vacuum, portable hand vacuum, typewriter, fire extinguisher, health equipment needed by children (asthma nebulizer, etc.), toys that require manual dexterity, outdoor water hose, mop, broom, dustpan, First Aid materials including thermometer.
Daily participation in Early Childhood Center (hours to be determined each term). Visits to homes of children. Participation in Center-Family Events. Yearly in-service classes. Ability to independently lift a 50-pound child. Ability to quickly and smoothly maneuver within the classroom and on the playground (running, rising from a floor position or child's chair, ability to dodge furniture to get to a needy child). Ability to maneuver on level ground or a hill on a variety of surfaces including grass, pea gravel, carpet, tile, asphalt, sand. Ability to move furniture and equipment in the classroom and on the playground as needed. Ability to clearly communicate with children, students and parents in person, by writing and on the telephone.
