Tenure-Track Faculty in Plastics Engineering

General Summary of Position:

Located 25 miles northwest of Boston, Massachusetts, the internationally recognized Department of Plastics Engineering at the University of Massachusetts Lowell is the largest ABET accredited plastics program in the Unites States. The Department is looking to hire faculty in all areas of polymer engineering and science including processing/manufacturing, materials science, and design of plastic products, processes, or tooling.  Applications are particularly welcome for faculty positions at Assistant and Associate Professor ranks in the following areas:

  • Design of products, composites, assemblies, machines, molds; design for manufacture
  • Plastics sustainability including biobased polymers, recycling, and plastics life cycle analysis
  • 3D printing process, machinery, and design
  • High performance and new polymer materials: High temperature/strength, reinforced, and cross-linked systems
  • Flexible films manufacturing and processing using roll-to-roll, coating or calendaring processes
  • Advanced or functional polymeric fibers:  fiber development, materials, melt or solution spinning, structure-property relationships
  • Life cycle management for plastics manufacturing: Resource planning and materials strategies, principles of logistics, quality assurance and control
  • Computational polymer fluid dynamics: modeling of rheology, processing and morphology relationships using finite element analysis or molecular dynamics simulation

 Minimum Qualifications (Required):

  • Earned doctorate in Plastics, Polymer, Materials, Chemical, or Mechanical Engineering or a closely related area
  • Outstanding research record in area(s) of expertise
  • Strong communications skills
  • Commitment to excellence in teaching
  • The ability to work effectively with diverse groups

 Additional Considerations:

Successful candidates for the Assistant Professor-level, tenure-track positions will have a record of publications that demonstrates potential success as a researcher; teaching experience is beneficial, as well as experience as a Postdoctoral Fellow. Successful candidates are expected to establish nationally recognized, sponsored research programs. While not required, industrial experience and a record of interdisciplinary collaboration will be viewed positively

Special Instructions to Applicants:

Please submit a CV, cover letter, teaching statement/philosophy, research statement, sample of scholarly work/publications.

Initial review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the positions are filled. However, the position may close when an adequate number of qualified applications are received.
