Position Summary

The College of Arts and Letters (CAL) at Michigan State University seeks applicants for an academic specialist for videography and outreach. The initial appointment will be for 3 years and has the potential for annual renewal based on performance and availability of funding. This is a fixed term, 12 month annual position and has the potential for annual renewal based on performance and availability of funding.  The candidate would produce high-quality, professional video productions for the Marketing & Communications office at CAL. The position will also have a partial, joint appointment in the Film Studies Program of the Department of English, focusing on outreach and multimedia preservation. Videography work would include shooting video and photographs on and off campus and producing video and photographic marketing pieces vital to achieving CAL’s strategic communication goals in the Marketing & Communications office. The candidate should also be able to assist with the development of archival platforms for CAL’s various media projects. Outreach, engagement and administration for Film Studies would include liaising with community partners for special events, developing promotional and archival strategies for multimedia content, and assisting with film lab management and online content maintenance. The candidate should have the ability to multi-task, prioritize and self-manage timelines; possess effective project management skills from ideation to launch; and be a strategic thinker with a proven ability to craft impactful and engaging stories through digital and video platforms. This position reports directly to the Dean’s office in the College of Arts and Letters, as well as to the Film Studies Program.

Basic Function
Candidate will oversee the creative and technical production processes for video stories including; ideation, script, storyboard development, interviews, editing, color correction, music, audio, and visual graphics. They will also master and export versions for online distribution and archival storage (i.e. web, digital applications, archival platforms). Within the Film Studies Program, the primary tasks include outreach functions such as developing off-campus partnerships and events, assistance with managing the college’s Film Production Lab and with maintaining the program website and social media presence, and innovating new platforms ofarchival storage for the program and college.

CharacteristicDuties and Responsibilities

  • Directs, schedules and coordinates locations, talent and crew in studio and on location for video productions.

  • Designs and edits scripts for newstories.

  • Brainstorms creative new visions for content.

  • Performs interviews with a varietyof subjects.

  • Evaluates remote locations anddirects lighting and camera for creative and effective compositions.

  • Provides direction to people on location shoots in order to elicit the desired performances.

  • Edits succinct and impactful stories from extensive interviews.

  • Maintains and monitors video andaudio material to assure compliance with archival and preservation standards.

  • Assists in the orientation and training of staff and student crew members using video equipment.

  • Analyzes and makes recommendations for the purchase and maintenance of video equipment.

  • Develops and maintains relationships with local film festivals and venues for Film Studies outreach.

  • Assists with the management andpromotion of Film Studies events.

Communication/InterpersonalRelationships
Interacts with:

  • Marketing & Communications office– In order to obtain information on scheduling and assignments. Direction and project management of priorities.  Thiswill be the candidate's primary appointment.

  • Faculty – in order to obtain information on current and future projects and to discuss strategies.

  • Technology Office – in order to coordinate technical specifications and/or equipment maintenance.

  • Student Employees – in order totrain, assign and monitor workflow and answer questions.

  • Local partners – in order to foster new outreach opportunities in the community.

Minimum Requirements

BA/BFA with extensive professional experience and training in studio and remote video production, directing, editing, preservation, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 

Desired Qualifications

MA or MFA preferred in Film, Video, and Multimedia Production;
