The Data Center Technician will report to the Hosting Services Manager. The Hosting Services team is responsible for supporting 3 data centers and 13 ECHs for University IT and its clients. The ideal candidate has a broad interest in IT as a whole, is a self-starter, and team player. The primary role of this position will be to perform computing hardware installations, moves and decommissions for a large variety of complex IT systems commonly found in corporate and research data center environments. These include, but are not limited to servers, clusters, consoles, network switches, routers and other voice and data peripheral equipment. In addition to physical hardware installations, this position will be required to install low voltage communications cabling as part of the activation process.

CORE DUTIES*:

  • Rack, stack, cable and label network, servers and storage systems in a data center environment. Configure VLANs, BIOS and system set up. Must be familiar with Dell, HP, and Cisco UCS.
  • Must be able to terminate copper and fiber cables.
  • Understand business processes and translate into system solutions.
  • Assist with feasibility studies of enhancement requests, identifying options and recommending an IT solution.
  • Assist the project manager in developing project scope, cost, resources, impact and schedule.
  • Create business requirements, including business rules, quality attributes, performance goals, external interfaces and constraints.
  • Collaborate with the business partners and test team to create and execute system test plans, user-acceptance testing and rollout.
  • Assist the development team to develop technical specifications.
  • Perform production support activities, including triaging issues, evaluating patches and fixes, assessing impact, and implementing solution.
  • Conduct in-depth analysis to solve problems, identifying gaps and issues that minimize system modification and maintenance; make recommendations, including discovering new approaches or applications.
  • Design and document modules and components and how they will interface with each other.
  • Develop functional specifications to ensure compliance with system development lifecycle methods.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:


Education & Experience:

Bachelor's degree and five years of relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated experience with both process and data modeling.
  • Demonstrated experience with fit/gap analysis.
  • Understanding of relational database concepts.
  • Strong understanding of the components of web applications.
  • Strong understanding of the software development life cycle.
  • Strong problem solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with minimum direction.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to establish effective, ongoing relationships with clients, staff and management.
  • Ability to manage multiple competing priorities and work under pressure in high stress situations.
  • Demonstrated ability to program or script.
  • Knowledge of BMC Remedy, Aperture Vista, and can utilize technology based tools.
  • Experience with ITIL a plus
Certifications and Licenses:

BICSI Installer 1 Technician Certification


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

  • Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks.
  • Frequently sit, grasp lightly/fine manipulation.
  • Occasionally stand/walk, use a telephone.
  • Rarely writing by hand, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 50 pounds individually, 80 pounds assisted.
