Professional Research Assistant

This part-time (.60 FTE) position with the Centers for American Indian and Alaska Native Health (CAIANH) of the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus will work on a gestational diabetes risk reduction intervention project. Supporting AI/AN Mothers and Daughters in Reducing Gestational Diabetes Risk is a randomized controlled trial that examines the role of preconception counseling in the reduction of gestational diabetes risk factors among overweight adolescent American Indian females. The position will be based in Shiprock, NM.

Nature of Work:

The person in this position will work with a study team with primary responsibility for coordinating a randomized controlled trial. This includes organizing project logistics, recruitment and enrollment of participants, conducting study visits at Northern Navajo Medical Center and in participants' homes, and interacting and communicating with study participants.

Examples of Work Performed:

Work closely with the Northern Navajo Medical Center Co-Investigator and other study investigators to identify patients for study participation; conduct patient outreach and telephone interviews to screen for eligibility; obtain consent and enroll participants; communicate with participants; obtain height and weight measurements and point-of-care (i.e., fingerstick) A1c tests on the girl participants at baseline, 3-, 6- and 12-month study visits; report findings to participants; ensure proper completion of participant survey via electronic methods and perform quality assurance on the data; assure standard delivery of the randomized controlled trial protocol; interact with investigators and other study staff, locally and at other study sites, and in Denver and Pittsburgh; participant in study-related training (human subjects, BMI measurement and calculation, A1c testing, study protocol, preconception counseling); recognize and report adverse events; work closely with UCD study staff and the Study PI to monitor and disburse respondent compensation and track project expenses; develop and organize project materials for advisory and review committees; and assist with additional duties as necessary.


Qualifications

Professional Field:

Nursing, dietetics, or health care; health research

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in a related field. Able to converse in Navajo and English. Relevant technical-level experience may be substituted for the degree requirement on a year-for-year basis. Previous experience conducting human subjects research. Master's level applicants are welcome to apply. Must have a valid driver's license, proof of valid auto liability insurance, dependable transportation, and be willing to travel throughout the Shiprock Service Unit.

Preferred Qualifications:

Course work in science, social science, allied health science, public health, or medical sciences.

This position is based in Shiprock, NM, and will require that the applicant be willing to travel (by personal vehicle) within the Shiprock Service Unit in New Mexico.
