Professional Research Assistant

Nature of Work:

We are looking for a highly energetic, self-motivated individual to join our laboratory. We are seeking a full-time Professional Research Assistant to work in the lab of Dr. Christopher Evans, PhD in the Pulmonary Division on the Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora, CO.

Examples of Work Performed:

Research in the Evans lab focuses on the regulation and function of respiratory tract mucins, the role of the airway epithelium in mucosal defense and inflammation, and the control of respiratory functions and particle/pathogen clearance. Research in the lab focuses on the use of mouse models of lung diseases. The person hired into this position will focus on the development and application of mouse models. Work will require breeding and handling of wild type and genetically engineered mouse strains. Specific responsibilities will include the breeding of mice, analysis of transgene presence in them, and induction of transgenes, followed by the establishment of exposure driven disease. Exposures will include inhaled challenges to allergens, particulates, smoke, microbes/microbial products, and potential therapeutics. This person will also perform and assist in the performance of studies to assess inflammation and injury in the lungs using surgical and histological techniques. This individual will be expected to maintain records of mouse breeding, husbandry, and colony census, which will be coordinated with other laboratory staff members during regular meetings as well as on an as needed basis.

Minimum Requirements:

Bachelor's in Science or related field. The individual must have effective communication and analytical skills, record keeping, and adaptability to changes in technological and scientific directions.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience studying immunology/inflammation and/or animal modeling/husbandry is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Background knowledge in animal models and laboratory practices, including the maintenance of transgenic mouse colonies and data collection are emphasized. The person hired into this position should have adequate skills in DNA extraction from tissue specimens, the use of PCR for genotyping.
