Position Summary:

The Division of University Housing is committed to providing an exceptional workplace for its workforce of approximately 450 career staff members and over 2,000 students. University Housing operates nineteen residence halls across the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus, providing a home to over 7,400 undergraduate students. We also operate three apartment communities, serving about 3,000 graduate students, academic staff, postdoctoral researchers, faculty, and their families. In addition, we manage seven dining venues across campus, and provide conference group and youth camp housing throughout the summer months.

University Housing is divided into five main departments: Administration, Dining & Culinary Services, Residence Hall Facilities, Residence Life, and University Apartments. This is a professional level accounting position performing accounting functions under the general supervision of the Accounting Manager. This position is responsible for providing analysis, interpretation, and preparation of complex financial data for management at all levels. A person in this position will design and prepare financial statements including monthly and annual reports using Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). This position is also responsible for reconciling accounts with complex transactions involving multiple subledgers and working with Campus accountants to reconcile the Housing general ledger to the Campus general ledger. The accountant will assist in the development and ongoing maintenance of a cost allocation system to ensure accurate estimates of the profitability of various business segments. The accountant is expected to be well grounded in internal controls and be able to recognize weaknesses, recommend improvements and implement changes that are needed to ensure a strong internal control environment. The accountant will also be responsible for providing direction and mentoring to other accountants and financial specialists in the accounting division. The incumbent will provide support and assist as needed in the implementation of plans and procedures in the event of an emergency.
