Position Information: The assistant vice chancellor for university communications and chief communications officer (AVC) will report to the vice chancellor for university advancement. This individual will oversee 25 staff and all aspects of marketing, communications, and messaging to build awareness of the university, the breadth and depth of its academic programs and faculty, and the contributions and achievements of its students and faculty at local, national, and international levels. Will conceive and implement an overarching documented strategic communications and marketing plan for UC Riverside that is innovative, progressive, and proactive, including messaging and brand identity that extends across all media and vehicles in order to build awareness of the university. Build and manage an outstanding strategic communications and marketing program which incorporates all traditional and digital channels and media, and which can be considered best-in-class compared to its peers across higher education. The AVC will review current communications, marketing, and branding programs, as well as publications, and new media usage, to ensure that the office of university communications is strategic, innovative, flexible, and audience-oriented. Evaluate the effectiveness and success of communication vehicles with different UC Riverside and external audiences on an ongoing basis. Minimum Requirements: Advanced management skills to select, train, manage, direct, guide, motivate and evaluate staff to produce high quality work; skill to take corrective action as required.
Advanced knowledge of the location, its achievements, mission, vision, goals, policies, and infrastructure; advanced knowledge of current affairs and issues in higher education and/or health sciences.
Advanced written, verbal, interpersonal communications, active listening and political acumen skills.
Advanced knowledge and understanding of all aspects of communications, including strategic planning for various media venues, technical aspects and requirements of various venues, and most appropriate and effective applications.
Advanced skills to advise and consult management on all aspects of communications including developing effective communications strategies and dealing effectively with inquiries regarding sensitive or complex issues or information.
Advanced skills to ensure production of high quality work within budget and time constraints.
Advanced analytical, critical thinking, project management, and problem recognition, avoidance and resolution skills.
Advanced knowledge and understanding of technical applications to effectively manage/supervise professional technical staff, including design concepts, various media and mediums, applications, etc.
Advanced knowledge and skills in financial and personnel administration and management.
Advanced skills to create, develop and implement comprehensive and effective long and short term strategic communications plans.
Strong personal integrity and work ethic, as well as a sense of humor and perspective.
Record of creative and entrepreneurial management; the ability to build, lead, mentor, and motivate staff; and the ability to encourage change and growth in both people and programs. A strong commitment to personal and professional development, and the ability to build a robust, autonomous, and collaborative team.
Able to work effectively with, delegate to, and provide direction and leadershp for a team under stringent deadline requirements. Willingness to deal directly and openly with conflict and disagreement in contstructive ways that lead to positive outcomes.
A keen eye for operational efficiency and optimal use of resources; the ability to plan, monitor, and manage a budget.
