The Associate Dean's core objective is to provide students with state-of-the-art scientific and preclinical training to equip them for their clinical year in affiliate schools. S/he will also have responsibility for the vet prep program, ensuring that these students are well prepared for entry to the DVM program.

S/he will have primary responsibility for developing and implementing an integrated veterinary curriculum on St Kitts, utilizing curriculum mapping and knowledge of day 1 competencies to inform development of a streamlined student experience. Attention will be paid to the costs incurred in delivering the program to provide the most economically-effective training for the student, while maintaining all the requirements of AVMA accreditation, commensurate with an excellent Veterinary School. An innovative approach to an outcomes-driven curriculum will be required. Implementation of the plan will require a consultative and consensual style of leadership. The post-holder will have access to considerable administrative resources in order to support operational excellence in the delivery of the program. Key colleagues will be the Director of IT, Director of Academic Technology, Learning Support, and Administrator for Teaching and Learning, who will have critical roles in implementing new models of delivery, and creating efficiencies to deliver better value for money.


The Associate Dean for Teaching and Learning will also provide pedagogical and academic guidance to develop the faculty on St Kitts in support of teaching. Further, the Associate Dean, will be active member of the Center for Innovation and Research in Veterinary & Medical Education providing stewardship and strategy forlead and organize novel research on veterinary education, involving significant numbers of faculty. S/he will also capitalize on the close working relationship with Ross University School of Medicine and other institutions within Adtalem Education Group to promote the University's philosophy of “One Health”, to leverage the synergies of training and assessment in medical and veterinary education.

S/he must work closely with the Dean to provide operational and service excellence and to maximize business development opportunities in training and curriculum provision, particularly relating to the School's internationalization agenda, for example organizing externships, articulation agreements and joint programs.

The Associate Dean will have responsibility for course assessments and for monitoring success of the program through outcomes assessment, in line with AVMA accreditation requirements, and will work closely with the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs, the Director of Alumni Relations, faculty, and Adtalem Home Office, to organize, promote, and develop direct assessments of learning outcomes in the pre-clinical and clinical programs, and into the post-graduate period. S/he will implement changes in response to any deficiencies noted.

In addition, the Associate Dean will be an integral member of the senior leadership team, reporting to the Dean and work in collaboration with this leadership group in order to oversee and maintain the academic programs of the School. S/he will participate in annual faculty evaluation for contract renewal, merit increase, and promotions.

  • Continual development of an effective, preclinical curriculum, mindful of controlling costs of tuition for students whilst achieving the best learning environment and experience for tomorrow's graduates.
  • Promoting application of academic technologies and cutting-edge educational delivery mechanisms in order to promote change.
  • Capitalizing on the School's location and One Health research theme to differentiate RUSVM from other Schools in the US and internationally, and to provide an intellectually stimulating experience for students.
  • Overall responsibility for exam content and mode of assessment throughout the curriculum.
  • Overall responsibility for maintaining full accreditation – specifically AVMA, including collection of relevant data and drafting the annual report, as well as routine metrics collection for DVG.
  • Chairing the Curriculum Committee and Learning Resources Committee.
  • Working with Heads of Department, to set and manage the budget for student teaching.
  • Responsibility for the Instructional Technology and Learning Support teams, Registry, Exam Center, timetabling, and the Library.
  • Responsibility for rigorously evaluating the program in terms of meeting learning objectives, and monitoring the quality and preparedness of RUSVM's graduates, and using the information to take appropriate remedial action.
  • Serving as the key person in ensuring compliance with regulatory bodies.
  • Ensuring that operational plans are properly resourced and administratively effective.
  • Responsibility for communications to faculty regarding strategy and new developments, when appropriate.
  • Ambassadorial responsibilities on behalf of the Dean, including membership of the DeVry Academic Board.
  • Overall responsibility for instructional IT platforms including E College, Canvas, Media Site, E Value, and PxDx applications.
  • Providing leadership and oversight of course and instructor evaluations.
  • Working closely with the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs to ensure that the clinical curriculum is robust in content, and consistent with RUSVM's learning objectives.
  • In collaboration with the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs, traveling to affiliate sites in the U.S. and internationally as required to review our curricular needs.
  • At clinical sites, responsible for development of monitoring of assessment methods, communication of these methods and consistent collection and analysis of data to ensure that that students and educators clearly understand how evaluation and grading practices will be conducted at each clinical site including clinical competencies.
  • Capitalizing on the technological assets available across institutions which have the potential to break new ground in veterinary education.
  • Contributing to the body of knowledge in veterinary education through publications and presentations at international meetings.
  • Engaging in teaching of the veterinary program in the appropriate discipline.
  • Collaborating with Research Center Directors to integrate research into the curriculum.
  • Completes other duties as assigned.



  • Required qualifications: DVM or equivalent degree
  • Required experience: Faculty experience at the Associate or Professor level in a College (or School) of Veterinary Medicine.

  • Expertise in curriculum development and curriculum mapping, assessment, faculty development, and policy development to enhance academic units.
  • A skilled academic leader with the experience, courage, and energy to support an agile organization, incorporating RUSVM's values and mission, and the ability to inspire others to follow.
  • A demonstrated commitment to diversity and demonstrated success in working with diverse communities.
  • Understanding of the complexities of the clinical placement process;
  • Successful experience in veterinary school administration with significant involvement in veterinary education.
  • Ability to lead accreditation processes.
  • The capacity to develop and enhance mechanisms for student support, retention, and student evaluation.
  • Completion of significant research on veterinary education and desire to conduct continued research in this field.
  • The ability to work cooperatively and effectively as a member of the School's senior leadership team.
  • Involvement in professional medical education associations, including but not limited to the AVMA and AAME.
