Lane Medical Library & Knowledge Management Center at Stanford enables biomedical discovery by connecting people with knowledge. Through innovative means, we create, acquire, deliver and integrate information to support excellence in research, education and patient care.

The library seeks a qualified applicant to fill the position of Medical Library Marketing Specialist to participate in the ongoing development and refinement of communications about the library's reference materials, services, programs, events and website capabilities to the clinical and research professionals across Stanford Medicine (Stanford Medical School, and the hospitals and clinics of Stanford Health Care and Stanford Children's Health). The work involves broadly promoting the library's services (candidates should be facile with website and database technologies and have experience with email marketing techniques) and meeting a wide-range of people across the medical center (so candidates should have a natural inclination to meet new people and excellent interpersonal communications skills).

Reporting to the Director for Knowledge Integration, the Medical Library Marketing Specialist is a key member of the web team and works with the Outreach & Communications Committee (OCC) in the marketing of online library services to targeted segments of Lane's user base. The role encompasses these areas of responsibility in prioritized order*:
I. User-Customer awareness
a. Reach out and create relationship with library users; proactively seek their feedback.
b. Quantify the segments of Lane's user base and identify optimal means of communicating with priority segments.
c. Maintain consistent contact with users in priority segments and grow user-customer database consistent with segments.
d. Maintain, grow and recommend expanded uses for user-customer database
II. Website production
a. As a member of web team, maintain and support the website production process
b. Build HTML and CSS components of web properties to support e-mailings and other library communications needs.
c. Gather and analyze response and usage data.
III. Promote library resources and services
a. Develops messaging and electronic marketing content to promote library resources, services, programs, and events.
b. Develop explanatory and promotional materials for website features and library services.
c. Build a sufficient understanding of the leading resources offered by the library to create promotional materials and/or identify content needed to promote those resources to target segments.
d. Make regular e-mailings of II a. and II b. type information to targeted segments of user base.
e. Demonstrate and provide training & support on website services to Lane staff and Stanford Medicine professionals.
IV. Project Management
a. Coordinate the elements involved in releasing, launching and promoting new and updated digital services and reference materials

  • Experience with product management, product marketing or marketing operations roles
  • Demonstrated experience with basic internet technologies, and tools (HTML editors, coding for different browsers)
  • Experience with website production technologies (e.g., XML, CSS, Javascript).
  • Design aesthetic - appreciation for the fine points that differentiate a good from a weak design
  • Experience with analytics tools (prefer Google Analytics) and experience tracking site usage data.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills and ability to quickly learn new skills
  • Demonstrated strong customer service skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, particularly experience writing for the web
  • Desire to learn and become skilled at reference searching and use of reference management software
  • Demonstrated ability to work creatively, collaboratively, and effectively both as a team member and independently.
  • Critical thinker - ability to articulate a problem and effectively contribute to discussions to develop practical alternatives and choose optimal solutions.
  • Experience planning projects, defining realistic project objectives and meeting deadlines.
  • Experience in any of the following areas:
  • Creating means for polling and requesting input from website users
  • Developing and implementing surveys or other market research instruments
  • Planning and/or recruiting for market research studies
  • Customer advocacy program
  • Developing ‘user guide' or tutorial type materials (web and/or print)
  • BA or BS in marketing, communications, business administration, web design, English or creative writing; or MBA; or MLIS Preferred.

Bachelor's degree and one year of relevant experience or a combination of education and relevant experience.
