The Director of Service Focus is a new leadership position for a collaborative, innovative and forward-thinking higher education professional interested in how service can be a central part of students' experience at Princeton University. This position is in response to the University's Service and Civic Engagement Self-Study Task Force which explored curricular and co-curricular initiatives to make service more integral to the Princeton experience. As a senior leader under the Executive Director of the Pace Center for Civic Engagement, with dotted line reporting to the Senior Associate Dean of International Programs, the Director of Service Focus is the primary public face for Service Focus and plays a critical role in setting the strategic agenda for the Service Focus student experience. The Director of Service Focus will encourage, support and invite diverse perspectives in a commitment to the University's diversity and inclusion.
Service Focus is a way for students to connect service with learning and offers opportunities for students from the spring of their first year through their sophomore year. Service Focus is comprised of four key elements, including a paid summer service internship, a service course, faculty engagement, and cohort-based programming. With specific administrative responsibility for the internship experience and cohort-based programming elements of Service Focus, the Director works closely with the Office of the Dean of the College which will have primary oversight for faculty engagement and service courses.
This position requires an astute and dynamic collaborator who is comfortable with being visible and can adroitly navigate the co-curricular, curricular and donor landscape of an institution such as Princeton. The Director of Service Focus will develop new, and cultivate existing, relationships with curricular and co-curricular campus partners, as well as internship partners in the local and wider global community. The successful candidate will have demonstrated competency in establishing and growing visible programs, and expertise in the areas of student learning and development; evaluation and assessment; and advising and supporting students. The Director of Service Focus will be directly involved in fundraising support of Service Focus and will manage the budget for Service Focus. This position will supervise Program Coordinator staff.
Partner development and collaboration (45%)
Create a network of campus and community partners and potential donors who will provide and support service-focused summer internship opportunities.
The Director will work closely with campus partners to identify summer internship opportunities to include in Service Focus for students to engage in the summer before their sophomore year. Through regular convenings, including an existing internship/fellowship group, and the development of best practices, the Director will serve as a resource to campus in the area of service-based internships. Through targeted outreach, the Director will identify new internship placements with community partner organizations and cultivate existing internship placements with community partners to ensure the integrity of the focus on service. Internships included in the program will represent diverse constituencies, a variety of sectors, social issues and geographic locations to ensure inclusivity of students' academic, personal and professional interests. The Director will manage the development advancement of Service Focus in its fundraising goals.
Cohort-based program development (35%)
Emphasize the intentional learning from service through relevant cohorts and programming.
The Director will develop the comprehensive programmatic design and vision for Service Focus. This will include ensuring that students are prepared for their service internship experience through training, embedded reflection, and critical thinking beginning in the spring semester of their first year. Students will become part of small group cohorts, each having an emphasis on the learning from the internship experience and its connection to the students' academics. The Director will be responsible for the development of this learning arc, which extends through the spring semester of the sophomore year. The Director will work closely with the Office of the Dean of the College to identify faculty mentors and relevant service courses as part of the learning. Scaling of Service Focus will be core to the Director's work with the goal of having 25% of the first-year class participate in Service Focus in three years and 50% of the first-year class involved in Service Focus in 10 years.
Evaluation and assessment (10%)
Develop and implement an evaluation strategy and plan.
In collaboration with campus partners and with the Pace Center Executive Director in an advisory role, the Director will develop metrics in benchmarking and assessing the Service Focus experience, including long-term impacts on students' curricular and co-curricular experiences. The Director will ensure the tracking, analysis and sharing of outcomes based on these established metrics. The Director will ensure alignment with university-wide civic engagement and service metrics.
Staff supervision (10%)
Direct work supervision of Program Coordinator staff
The current Pace Center Program Coordinator with primary oversight for the Bogle Fellows program will report to the Director.
Education and Experience Requirements
- Bachelor's degree required, with preference for a Master's degree or equivalent of increasingly responsible management experience in an educational institution.
- Knowledge of best practices with internships and cohort-focused learning in a higher education setting.
- Demonstrated skills and success in building relationships and working collaboratively with a variety of stakeholders
- Experience working in co-curricular and/or curricular service in a higher education setting
- Experience working with diverse populations
- Experience in program management and development
- Experience in advising and mentoring students
- Experience with budget management
- Excellent verbal, written, facilitation, and presentation skills
