MGH Institute of Health Professions, an independent graduate school founded by the world-renowned Massachusetts General Hospital and a member of Partners HealthCare, invites applications and nominations for the leadership position of Chair, Department of Communication Sciences & Disorders (CSD) in the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences (SHRS). The Institute seeks an experienced, innovative, and visionary leader to lead the CSD Department due to the current Chair's retirement.

About the Institute.
The MGH Institute is an interprofessional graduate school in Boston that prepares leading health professionals in Communication Sciences and Disorders, Health Professions Education, Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Physician Assistant Studies, and Rehabilitation Sciences (PhD). Our interdisciplinary PhD in Rehabilitation Sciences is designed for licensed professionals conducting clinical research in these disciplines.

The MGH Institute is located in the historic Charlestown Navy Yard, overlooking Boston waterfront and downtown Boston. The MGH Institute boasts more than 138,000 square feet of classroom and laboratory space spanning seven buildings, including a dedicated research center and research labs for grant-funded scholars.

About the leadership opportunity. The Chair of CSD is an exceptional opportunity for a health professions leader who desires to be part of a forward thinking and congenial educational team committed to preparing students in an interprofessional learning environment. The Chair holds a ranked faculty position at the Institute and reports directly to the Dean of the SHRS. The department is fully staffed, including both an experienced Associate Chair and a Director of Clinical Education, and offers an accredited Master's Degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders as well as a Certificate of Advanced Study in Literacy and Language. The Master's degree program ranks seventh in the top 10 graduate programs in speech-language pathology according to the US News and World Report, and has an excellent reputation for preparing graduates for both medically-based and school-based practice. After graduation from the Master's Program, approximately half of the students work in medically related facilities and half work in school-related settings. Faculty are active in research, directing labs that include the Speech and Language Literacy Lab (SAIL), the Speech and Feeding Disorders Lab, and the Brain, Education and Mind Lab (BEAM), among others.

The Chair of the CSD Department is responsible for all aspects of academic leadership and administration within the department, including setting strategic direction, providing mentorship and faculty development, enhancing the diversity of student enrollment and faculty, budgeting and fiscal management, curriculum oversight and evaluation, and development of new initiatives. The Chair also has responsibilities in teaching and scholarly activities.


Qualifications. The Chair must hold a doctoral degree and should understand the important complementary roles of both medical and school-based research and practice. Previous academic leadership and experience are desirable. The applicant should have strong communication skills, demonstrated leadership qualities, and a record of mentoring, teaching, scholarship, and service. The position is a 12-month appointment, with rank and salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.
