The Foothill-De Anza Community College District is currently accepting applications for the faculty position of Instructor, Reading, De Anza College.

De Anza College was founded in 1967 as part of the Foothill-De Anza Community College District and occupies a beautiful 112-acre site in Cupertino, the heart of Silicon Valley. De Anza prides itself on the success of its students and is consistently at or near the top statewide in community college transfers to the University of California, California State University, and private universities. On average, De Anza serves 24,000 students each quarter in its state-of-the-art facilities with outstanding general education and vocational courses, including online classes.

The Reading Department offers a sequence of developmental courses, as well as a transfer level course. The courses are primarily stand-alone; however, we also offer reading courses linked with writing and courses in other disciplines as well as cohort programs. The primary objective for reading instructors is to concentrate on developing cognitive skills that enable students to succeed in transfer level courses in all disciplines. As reading faculty, we support and respect the diversity of our students by using culturally responsive curriculum and multiple ways of engaging developmental readers.

Teach reading courses using a variety of culturally inclusive and equity-minded teaching strategies that draw upon the multiple intelligences of our students. Support the success of all students through understanding and effective use of diverse pedagogies, forms of assessment, feedback techniques, and multiethnic materials. Advise and assist students and develop strategies that meet the needs of a diverse student population and facilitate student retention and success. Collaborate with other members of the Reading Department, the Language Arts Division, and instructors from other divisions in the development of new courses and/or programs needed for student success. Assist in the development and revision of curricula, text selection, student learning outcomes, and Reading Department program review. Keep abreast of research, pedagogical and methodological developments, and equity issues in learning and teaching.

Standard duties expected of all faculty include development and evaluation of curricula, maintaining scheduled office hours, attending department and division meetings, pursuing professional growth activities, and performing other duties consistent with the role of an instructor. Instructors also have the opportunity to serve on district and college committees and participate in campus extra-curricular activities.


  1. Understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, disability, and sexual orientation of community college students, faculty and staff.
  2. Master's degree in education with a specialization in reading or teaching reading OR

Bachelors in any academic discipline AND twelve (12) semester units of course work in teaching reading AND Master's in English, literature, linguistics, applied linguistics, composition, comparative literature, TESL, or psychology OR

The equivalent.

NOTE: Official Transcripts verifying qualifications will be REQUIRED prior to an offer of employment. Applicants who have international transcripts must obtain transcripts that are evaluated by an independent educational-equivalency evaluation company and obtain an English translation (if necessary). These services are to be done at the applicant's expense. Both Foothill De Anza CCD employees and external candidates must submit transcripts.


  1. Experience in and passion for teaching reading to adult learners at the post-secondary level.
  2. Experience and/or commitment to working with students from diverse backgrounds, including cultural, ethnic, socioeconomic, national identity, LGBTQ, and gender, among others.
  3. Evidence of commitment to equity and culturally responsive student-centered pedagogy through coursework, training, and/or experience.
  4. Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to collaborative instruction within and across disciplines.
  5. Understanding of and ability to effectively apply current reading methodology, assessment and engaging instructional techniques.
  6. Demonstrated ability to work and communicate effectively with colleagues of diverse backgrounds at the department, division, and college level.
  7. Experience with incorporating instructional technology or multimedia instructional applications in order to meet diverse student needs.
