JOB PURPOSE:

Administer, implement and interpret university and department policies and procedures on issues regarding department policies and procedures. Identify, clarify, and resolve highly visible or complex issues with substantial significance and impact that may span multiple areas, using expert technical and professional knowledge requiring independent judgement.

CORE DUTIES*:
  • Manage an area or program in student services, specifically a significant facet of the Schwab Learning Center, analyze effectiveness, and make final decisions on program eligibility.
  • Engage in critical analysis of student and program concerns to resolve substantial issues which may span multiple areas, using advanced technical and professional knowledge.
  • Develop and implement programming, make strategic recommendations for future programs.
  • Interpret and implement university policy related to academic policies; oversee the implement of policies and practices for a student population or school.
  • Analyze and develop report requirements, portals, and student facing communications.
  • Evaluate and determine recommendations on technology resources, negotiate with resources, options, and vendors on materials related to the SLC program.
  • Provide direct advice to students on a range of issues including, but not limited to, academic support, accessibility, workplace demands, executive functioning, community standards, to assist them in making appropriate choices and decisions.
  • Provide consulting advice to internal and external organizations; act as subject matter expert in a specialized field.
  • Oversee key processes, including contribution and direction on policy and program content.
  • Contribute to the development of staff training programs.
  • Administer a variety of standardized tools as part of a student's Personal Learning Profile.
  • Work closely alongside the SLC's UDL and Strategy Specialist.
  • Collaboration with key team members including the SLC UDL and Strategy Specialist, E- portfolio team, SLC Coordinator, SLC Director, SLC Tutor Coordinator, and UDL Innovation Studio staff, as well as staff in Stanford's Career Development Office (BEAM) and Vaden Student Health Center.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Education & Experience:

Bachelor's degree and five years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Advanced communication skills to clearly and effectively communicate information to internal and external audiences, client groups, and all levels of management.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills to review and analyze complex information.
  • Advanced computer skills, including experience with Microsoft Office Suite and a variety of presentation software.
  • Advanced customer service skills.
  • Relevant computer systems/technology experience.
  • Understanding of financial transactions.
  • Ability to ensure and apply compliance with legal, financial, and university policies and external regulations. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
    • MA or Ph.D. in Special Education, Learning Sciences, Psychology, or other related program to learning disabilities, neurodiversity, learner variability, cognitive neuroscience, Universal Design for Learning.
    • Ability to take initiative and ownership of projects and proven success in following through and completing projects.
    • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
    • Excellent interpersonal skills.
    • Ability to prioritize, multi-task, and assign work to others.
    • Ability to routinely and independently exercise sound judgment in making decisions.
    • Excellent collaboration skills.
    • Experience collecting and analyzing data.
    • Demonstrated interest in applied research.
    • Experience and interest in assessment of student and program outcomes.
    • Experience working with college students with learning differences.
    • Previous research or technical publications in related areas.
    • Experience administering and interpreting psychoeducational evaluations and cognitive testing typically associated with the diagnoses of learning disabilities, ADHD, and other types of learning differences.
    • Experience with e-portfolios.
    • Conference presentation experience.
    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:
    • Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks.
    • Frequently sitting.
    • Occasionally stand/walk, reach/work above shoulders, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, use a telephone, sort/file paperwork or parts, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
    • Rarely twist/bend/stoop/squat, kneel/crawl.

    • Work alongside a professional group of employees to serve students with learning differences. The SLC program is a rapidly growing and fast-paced environment.
    • Ability to work between offices and desks until a permanent location for the Center is established, estimated October 2017.

    Stanford University's Schwab Learning Center (SLC) was made possible through the endowment of entrepreneur, Mr. Charles Schwab, who is himself dyslexic and a Stanford graduate. The services of the SLC are not mandated activities, such as those offered in Stanford's Office of Accessible Education. However, they offer important support for students with learning differences during college and across the lifespan. Some of the services include: self-awareness of one's personal learning profile, assignment to experienced learning specialists for advice and specialized learning and technology-based strategies; 1-1 tutoring with graduate students trained in working with students with a variety of learning differences; technology training and assessment; community, clinician, faculty and TA outreach and professional development; diagnostic screenings for suspected learning differences; advice on disclosure in the workplace and at school; a resource center for graduates on navigating the accommodations process on graduate and licensing exams; forums with internationally known experts; and career panels hosting successful Stanford graduates with learning differences; partnerships with research organizations and home to the CAST UDL Innovation Studio at the Schwab Learning Center.

    Recently, the SLC has embarked on an effort to redesign the Center to reflect current priorities in the fields of Dyslexia, ADHD, Universal Design for Learning (UDL), and address the greater neurodiversity among postsecondary students. The SLC in alignment with BEAM, Stanford Career Development is designed to prepare students for success in life at Stanford and beyond. This requires a different philosophical approach to provide services that prepare students for the lifespan, focus on student strengths, and provide innovative tools to address student needs. The new vision is intended to propel the SLC to be the foremost center of its kind in postsecondary settings.

    The three key messages of the SLC focus on:

    A commitment to globally shifting the paradigm of disability to a strengths-based model of learning differences and Universal Design for Learning, through education, innovation and outcomes;

    Expert staff who are compassionate and dedicated to teaching students to leverage their gifts and talents through self-awareness and research-based activities; and

    The design of innovative services, tools and programs to prepare students with learning differences to live meaningfully across the lifespan.
