The Data Scientist is a key member of the Operational Intelligence (OI) team within the Financial Management Services (FMS) group. The OI team is responsible for assisting numerous FMS departments develop key business insight through the analysis of operational data. Under minimal supervision, this role will be tasked with gathering, preparing and analyzing a wide variety of data in order to facilitate business decision making. This analyst must creatively apply diverse data analysis techniques in order to find business insight in a data set and communicate those findings clearly to clients. Additionally, the analyst will leverage reporting tools to construct user-friendly interactive dashboards. This position will provide the opportunity to become familiar with a broad set of data, business processes, as well as data manipulation and visualization technologies.

JOB PURPOSE: Interprets, monitors, and analyzes information regarding policies, procedures, demographics, and operational outcomes yielding actionable information to guide decisions in wide-ranging areas. Provides related consultative services. This level performs under minimal supervision includes both routine and challenging assignments; this is differentiated from Level 2 based on the smaller impact and visibility of findings involved (e.g.: an academic program might be changed; explore the use of staggered work hours and work from home options as a means of decreasing in and out bound traffic to the campus during peak hours).

Specific responsibilities of this position include:

  • Work under consultative or self-initiated direction to assess and produce useful data insight from a mix of structured and unstructured data sources.

  • Devise methods for identifying data patterns and trends using both qualitative and quantitative techniques. Determine and recommend additional data collection and reporting requirements.

  • Profile and validate sources of data where very little metadata is provided

  • Develop algorithms and statistical model; and perform statistical analyses on data appropriate to business problem at hand.

  • Apply data mining techniques such as predictive analytics or clustering on various data sets

  • Serve as a resource for non-routine business inquiries that require performing summary and inferential statistics on various data sets

  • Participate in the development of key project deliverables and artifacts such as business requirements, functional design documents, fit/gap analyses, and report mockups

  • Answer questions by developing research methodology, gathering data and/or using appropriate statistical techniques on available data.
  • Drive collection of new data and the refinement of existing data sources; apply and use algorithms or other advanced techniques to accomplish this.
  • Fully analyze the problem, question existing processes and assumptions, gather data and information, find and evaluate alternative solutions, and propose best course of action.
  • Explore data from multiple angles, determine meaning behind the data, and recommend ways to apply the data.
  • Communicate, convey, and visualize informed conclusions and recommendations across an organization's leadership structure in a manner to “tell the story” behind the data and influence how organization approaches the challenge.
  • Through data, may predict what actions will be taken in a designated timeframe for a prescribed issue/challenge.
  • May need to collaborate with other organizations to gather data. Proactively seek and locate data, including outside benchmarks or comparative data, to support or refute proposed decisions.

    Education & Experience:
    Bachelor degree in statistics, mathematics, information systems, or related field and four years' extensive experience or combination of education and relevant technical field experience solving analytical problems using quantitative approaches

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Proficiency in manipulating and analyzing complex, high-volume, high-dimensionality data from varying sources.
  • Extensive experience in and strong passion for empirical research and answering hard questions with data.
  • Interpersonal and communication skills to positively convey findings and influence senior leadership & faculty.
  • Demonstrated experience querying, processing, analyzing, and reporting on large data sets.
  • Familiarity and experience with intermediate statistical methodsStrong analytical capabilities, strategic thinking skills, and problem-solving abilities
  • Ability to convert data insights into business decisions and deliver such information in a clear and understandable manner to non-technical clients
  • Extreme willingness to learn and continuously refine skills relevant to data analysis
  • Expertise in Python and data-centric Python libraries such as pandas, numpy, and scikit-learn
  • Expertise in data querying techniques such as SQL or MapReduce
  • Experience eliciting, interpreting, and documenting user requirements, preferably in the context of data analysis and reporting
  • Prior success in positions requiring high levels of self-directed work
  • Ability to manage multiple activities in a deadline-oriented environment; highly organized, flexible and rigorous attention to detail
  • Expertise using data visualization tools such as Tableau, QlikView, or D3.
  • Experience using database technologies such as Oracle, MySQL, MongoDB, MS Access, etc.
  • Previous experience working with financial data preferred
  • Knowledge of Remedy or equivalent ITSM application preferred
  • Previous higher education experience preferred Certifications and Licenses: None
  • Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks.
  • Frequently sit, sort, file paperwork or parts, grasp lightly, and use fine manipulation, lift, carry, push and pull objects that weigh 10 pounds or less.
  • Occasionally write by hand, twist, bend, stoop and squat.
  • Rarely stand, walk, reach or work above shoulders and use a telephone.
