The UConn Library invites applications for a senior leadership position reporting to the Vice Provost for UConn Library. The Associate University Librarian (AUL) for Research & Learning partners with a dedicated leadership team in the service of providing leading-edge library programs that strengthen the teaching, research, and outreach mission of the University. The AUL provides leadership for 34 engaged staff that span Storrs and four regional libraries and is responsible for cultivating and maintaining exceptional programs in research, access, and virtual and in-person reference across the UConn Library system. Through partnership with Library colleagues, academic deans, faculty, and students, the AUL leads the effort to enhance cross-disciplinary connections among researchers and collections, pursue funding opportunities, and promote a culture of accessibility and exploration to directly improve the user experience.

  1. Directs, plans, and communicates Research & Learning efforts. Ensures that Area and Unit priorities are in alignment with Library's strategic initiatives.
  2. Provides the vision and direction to develop Library programs that encourage collaboration, innovation, and exploration in current and emerging research models, pedagogical approaches, and access services.
  3. Builds Area-wide expertise in digital publishing and scholarship, data visualization, research data management, geospatial services, and open educational resources.
  4. Directs the data informed assessment of existing collections and programs in research, teaching and learning, and access services. Develops new models to meet evolving user needs.
  5. Supervise, guide and inspire unit staff; conducts major personnel decisions including training and evaluation of staff.
  6. Fosters an organizational climate based on respect, service, teamwork, communication, professional growth, and responsibility in which diversity, creativity, and innovation thrive.
  7. Actively engages in the development, implementation and evaluation of Library goals and objectives, and assists in developing policies and strategic decisions.
  8. Represents the Library through participation in local, regional, and national cooperative, outreach, and professional activities.

  1. Assigns, oversees, reviews, and evaluates work of direct reports. Establishes work schedule(s) and approve timecard(s). Maintains supervisory files.
  2. Promotes inclusivity and is communicative about priorities, opportunities, and challenges. Encourages new thinking and ideas and actively fosters open communication.
  3. Follows the Performance Management Guidelines as outlined by the Library's Office of the Vice Provost, UConn's Department of Human Resources, and the staff member's contractually specified evaluation process.
  4. Provides training and assistance to each direct report. Supports involvement in professional development activities and provides internal development opportunities as appropriate to each position.

  5. Works effectively in current office applications, software, and communication tools as set by the Library and/or University of Connecticut.
  6. Performs duties parallel to position responsibilities as required.

  1. A graduate degree in Library and Information Science from a program accredited by the American Library Association with a minimum of five years of demonstrated leadership experience in an academic or research library setting.
  2. Demonstrated progression in increasingly responsible administrative roles in an academic library.
  3. Evidence of experience in two or more relevant areas (e.g., research services, collection building and assessment, instruction, instructional design, regional libraries, public services).
  4. Proven leadership ability and a collaborative management style that fosters trust, respect, and successful working relationships in a complex and dynamic work environment.
  5. Demonstrated experience and capacity to work creatively, inspire innovation, think strategically, and lead organizational change.
  6. Demonstrated experience with personnel management and supervision.
  7. Significant organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  8. Active engagement with current library scholarship, research, and a strong record of service to the library profession.
  9. Willingness to travel and work a flexible schedule.

  1. Experience envisioning and implementing user-focused services.
  2. Experience in developing and implementing strategic plans and projects.
  3. Demonstrated knowledge of instructional technologies and practices, digital scholarship, scholarly communication, data management, or other specialized area.
  4. Record of accomplishment of implementing emerging trends in higher education in two or more relevant areas.
  5. Involvement in planning user-focused physical learning environments.
  6. Background in skill training, defining positional needs, developing staffing plans, and mentoring across a range of professional experience.
  7. Proven ability to secure new funding opportunities in an academic environment.


This is a full time management-exempt position based in Storrs with an anticipated start date of January, 2018. Salary is dependent upon education, qualifications, and experience.
