Key Responsibilities This Veterinary Technician's primary responsibility for this position is to provide technical services to the Equine Section in the Veterinary Health Center. This position is also responsible for entering all Equine Section financial and medical records data into the hospital information system. Additional, responsibility is to perform or assist with radiographic procedures associated with the Equine Section. A primary mission of the Hospital is to provide quality medical services for teaching, research and clients within the surrounding area. Quality, professional technical representation in the Equine Section is critical to providing services to support this mission. This position is also responsible for coordination of animal treatments; instruct, train and supervise students and employees in approved treatment technique.  This position is designated as essential.
  • Hospital Information System - This position will be responsible for accurately entering all information into the hospital information system for the Equine Section. This task involves daily review of treatments, associated charges, and medical record informational updates for inpatient and outpatient client cases as well as research and teaching animals. Accuracy and attention to detail are required so that treatments and charges are entered into the computer system in a timely fashion. 
  • Radiology - Supervise, perform or assist with radiographic procedures associated with equine clinical cases and research. Provide supervision and instruction to professional students regarding patient positioning, radiographic technique and radiation safety. Provide quality control for radiographic studies including decision making regarding the adequacy of studies when the radiologists are absent from the department. Supervise animal care for equine cases in the Radiology Section. Monitor and take steps to assure a safe working environment (radiation and physical safety) for students and personnel in the department. 
  • Technical Services  - This position will provide on-going staffing relative to the service commitment of the teaching hospital. Technical responsibilities of this position will be shared by Equine Medicine, Surgery and Field Service areas of the KSU-VHC. Technical responsibilities will include equipment setup and operation, surgical preparation and setup and clinical assistance to faculty within the area (as scheduled) to facilitate services and communications between hospital activities such as radiology, central preparation, and the dispensary. Technical responsibility for daily ICU coverage from 8:30 to 9:30 am while students attend rounds may be included during some rotations. Typical responsibilities may include: a) Maintain the equine barn on a daily basis. This will include stocking and cleaning sinks in the receiving area, tack room and working dispensary. Also return residual products to central dispensary or central supply following the discharge of a patient. b) Maintain all equipment associated with the conduct of the Equine Section in good working order. c) Participate in orientation for new student rotations. d) Take an active role in the supervision and training of fourth year veterinary students in current technical aspects of large animal medicine to include such areas as intensive care patients, indwelling catheter maintenance, injection techniques, use of stomach tube, maintenance of fluid therapy patients, clipper care, proper restraint techniques and safety while loading and unloading patients. e) Maintain the Equine ICU area (including stocking and patient monitoring). f) Provide support to endoscopy procedures, endoscopy equipment maintenance and cleaning as outlined by usage protocol. Technician will set up endoscopy equipment and supplies, assist clinicians during procedures, enter appropriate charges for supplies used and procedure into the hospital information system, clean equipment according to established protocols, and restock supplies after each use. g) Maintain the cleanliness of Cubex equipment located in equine treatment preparation area. h) Participate in Clinical Skills course for junior students. i) Assist with examination and treatment of equine patients that are admitted to the hospital as outpatient or inpatients. Examinations and treatments will include all equine patients that arrive to the VHC (equine internal medicine, surgery, theriogenology) or are patients through the equine Field Service unit. 
  • Additional Responsibilities - Additional technical and training responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following duties: a) Initiate measures to increase the efficiency and operation of the Equine Section as it relates to technical training and patient care. b) As necessary, assist with coordination of emergency care, vacation period coverage, and unexpected teaching demands with other technicians. c) Maintain proficiency in operation and maintenance of hospital equipment (i.e. endoscope, ultrasound, etc.). Work is reviewed daily, on a case by case basis, by technical supervisor and senior clinical faculty. Work is also periodically reviewed, by supervisor and Hospital Director for results achieved. 
  • Clinical Facilitator -This position will be responsible for monitoring patient care; patient flow in-hospital and in the isolation area; patient record maintenance; and patient handling, treatment, and restraint during all phases of the teaching program while directly interacting with students, faculty and staff. This will allow supervision of case management by students, to include teaching of basic nursing skills to students, while House Officers attend learning opportunities. Initiative and oversight will be needed to supervise maintenance and stocking activities of dispensary and emergency carts in the work area. Typical responsibilities may include: a) Plan daily schedule based on logged appointments. Check with duty clinicians for rescheduled or non-scheduled activities. b) Organize students, necessary materials and equipment to facilitate efficiency for clients with in-patients and outpatients received throughout the day. c) Supervise case treatments beginning at 8:00 am and ending at 5:00 pm, when necessary. Assist students in restraint to ensure safety and proper patient care. d) Assist faculty in monitoring medical records. Assure daily data entry and billing is kept up to date within the Hospital Management System computerized hospital management system, following the established KSU-VHC format. e) Monitor, on a daily basis, patient care and status. This includes feed cards, stall maintenance, feed and watering protocols, and animal appearance.

  • Completion of a two year college program in veterinary or animal technology accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association. 
  • Must be registered as a veterinary technician under the authority of Kansas Board of Veterinary Medical Examiner within six months of appointment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in Veterinary Medical Hospital, experience with animal restraint and handling, standard emergency care and teaching and/or supervisory experience.
