Job Description:

The University of Florida Large Animal Hospital is recruiting for a Large Animal Surgery Induction/Recovery Technician. The individual in this position primarily acts as the point person in the induction of and recovery from anesthesia of patients (mostly horses) for surgery and other procedures including MRI, CT, Radiology, etc. The technician will also assist in movement of patients in and out of OR, MRI, and CT units, and assist in cleaning and maintenance of LAS surgical induction/recovery suites and associated anesthesia equipment. The technician may also assist in handling of patients for other diagnostic imaging procedures. These duties require an individual to have extensive experience working with all breeds of horses and their breed specific physical and behavioral traits.  This is a physically demanding position requiring significant amount of strength and agility.

The successful candidate will possess the following abilities and/or characteristics:

  • Ability to work in and around MRI equipment
  • Proficient and experienced at handling a variety of horses
  • Appropriate physical strength and size to meet demands of assisting anesthetic recovery of horses and other large animals
  • Experience working in equine hospital/clinic environment
  • Experience with radiography and other imaging modalities
  • Ability to work within a team and perform with a minimum level of supervision
  • Ability to plan, organize and coordinate daily tasks/schedules
  • Ability to handle frequent interruptions and adapt to changes in workload and work schedule

This is a full-time position requiring availability Monday–Friday, for varying shifts between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. as required by the service. Position may require working alternate shifts including evenings, holidays and weekends.   Position will require regular participation in rotating surgical “on-call duty”. 

Advertised Salary:

$14.00-$16.00 per hour, commensurate with experience

Minimum Requirements:

High school diploma or equivalent and two years of work experience loading, unloading, restraining, handling and treating horses or one year of work experience loading, unloading, restraining, handling and treating horses in a veterinary academic teaching hospital.

  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Physical ability to handle, manipulate and restrain large animals.
  • Good communication skills including on the telephone and in person; as well as ability to read and compose grammatically correct sentences are critical to success on this position.
  • Good computer skills.
  • Ability to deal with the public in a tactful and courteous manner.
  • Ability to plan, organize and coordinate daily tasks.
  • Ability to perform basic arithmetic calculations involving money
  • Knowledge of Medical Terminology, veterinary medicine, medical records, and billing systems
  • Ability to make timely decisions
  • Ability to work within a team and perform with minimum supervision
  • Ability to multitask as well as ability to set and change priorities in a face paced, high-pressure environment while maintaining a positive attitude.
  • Ability to work accurately with attention to detail
  • Ability to handle frequent interruptions and adapt to changes in workload and work schedule
