Assistant Professor of Religion – College of Liberal Arts & Sciences
Butler University seeks to hire a tenure-track assistant professor of religion who specializes in Islam, and whose scholarly interests involve critical reflection on issues of social justice and diversity. The candidate should have teaching proficiency in contemporary Middle Eastern and/or African Islam, and should be proficient in Arabic. Additional expertise in Islam elsewhere (e.g., North America, Southeast Asia) is highly desirable, as is the ability to teach upper-level religion courses in other fields outside the program’s existing strengths in biblical studies, Christian theology, Asian religions, and religion and science/science fiction. The successful candidate will teach regularly in Butler’s first year seminar program, and will be able to teach courses of interest to at least one (and preferably more) of the following interdisciplinary majors/minors: Gender, Women’s, and Sexuality Studies; International Studies; African Studies; Science, Technology, and Environmental Studies; and/or Peace and Conflict Studies. The successful candidate will demonstrate clear signs of being a program builder who brings an infectious enthusiasm to the classroom. Teaching load is 3/3.
Candidates should expect to have Ph.D. in hand by August 1st, 2018.
