Job Description

The Coordinator, Athletics Academic provides registration assistance to assigned student-athletes, raises awareness of potential academic success risks of student-athletes, and provides assistance to all coaching staff with matters related to the academic standing of their team members. Supports and coordinates services, programs, and opportunities that foster the motivation of student-athletes, promote the importance of an undergraduate education, and maintain the academic integrity of the institution.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in an appropriate area of specialization.

Two year of experience in academic advising, sports management, or related field in higher education.

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree from an accredited institution in Sports Administration, Higher Education Administration, Counseling, or closely related field.

Experience working with student-athletes at a Division I university.

Experience supervising college students.

Experience with programmatic development and assessment.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge of NCAA rules on progress towards degree and academic progress rate (APR).

Knowledge of state statutes and rules of higher education within the state of Florida.

Working knowledge of effective decision-making and conflict resolution techniques.

Strong leadership skills.

Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to function in a team environment.

Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and flexibility in problem solving.

Ability to demonstrate a personal philosophy of care for others.

Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing to a broad constituency including administrators, faculty, staff, students, parents, and vendors.

Salary Range $34,000 - $36,000

Job Duties

Essential Job Duties

•Assists the Director of Compliance in continuing eligibility certification process, which includes mid-year certification, year-end and post-summer session certification of eligibility.

•Provides weekly, mid-year, and year end grade reports (and team reports) to designated faculty and staff. Identifies, assists, and monitors the progress of at risk student-athletes; provides progress reports on other selected student-athletes as needed. Collects and provides academic progress rate (APR) information to the Director of Compliance.

•Provides academic assistance for a designated caseload of all first time in college (FTIC) and lower level first-year transfer student-athletes. Assists with course registration after admission, including review of course articulation for transfer students.

•Maintains regular, ongoing communication with Academic Advisors involved in advising student-athletes. Serves as liaison to Academic Advisors, Admissions, Registrar's office, professors, and directors of campus academic centers for NCAA academic eligibility standards and requirements.

•Coordinates the academic support program(s) for all student-athletes. Works directly with directors of campus resource centers, and coordinates referral process to these offices.

•Determines hours of monitored study hall in the Student-Athlete Learning Center, as well as hours of operation for the computer lab.

•Hires, trains, and supervises study hall monitors, computer lab monitors, tutors, and mentors as needed. Coordinates textbook distribution/return program as well as the laptop computer loan program.

•Provides travel letters to a designated caseload of student-athletes to request excusal for missed class time to accommodate travel for competition.

•Assists with the recruitment of student-athletes. Meets with recruited student-athletes on official or unofficial visits to campus to provide information about the academic support program and the academic environment at FGCU.

•Assists coaches by scheduling appointments for the potential student athlete and her/his family with faculty and/or Academic Advisors in the major/college of interest during campus visits.

•Develops and implements a New Student-Athlete Orientation program focusing on the unique transition issues of student-athletes at FGCU.

•Monitors budget for Student-Athlete Learning Center.

•Provides recommendations regarding policies, procedures, and protocol for service delivery.

•Complies with all University, ASUN Conference, or Coastal Collegiate Sports Association (CCSA), regulations, as applicable, as well as all NCAA rules and regulations. Remains current with all changes in NCAA, as well as changes to University, ASUN Conference and CCSA rules and regulations, as applicable, regarding intercollegiate athletics. This includes the requirement for self-reporting any possible rule violations and participation in the annual NCAA continuing education programs including passing the NCAA certification test. Further, you are advised that any violation of NCAA rules is prohibited and may result in disciplinary action up to and including termination of employment.

Other Duties

•Represents the university and Intercollegiate Athletics during campus and community events.

•Attends monthly Eagles Council meetings.

•Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
