Duties: Academically Based Community Service (ABCS) is at the core of the Netter Center's mission and activities. ABCS Integrates service with research, teaching, and learning and works to improve the quality of life in the community and the quality of learning and scholarship in the university through collaborative problem-solving, K-20. ABCS fosters structural community improvement (e.g., effective public schools, neighborhood economic development), emphasizes student and faculty reflection on the service experience and helps students to become active, creative, contributing citizens of a democratic society. ABCS reaffirms Ben Franklin's belief that: 'The great Aim and End of all Learning... is service [to society].'

The ABCS Research and Program Coordinator coordinates the development and ongoing implementation of ABCS courses; coordinates connections between ABCS courses and ABCS faculty; and coordinates the research on ABCS development, implementation and impacts (individual and collective); and coordinates and helps conduct research on ABCS development and impacts. This includes work with faculty to develop syllabi, course partnerships and collaborative projects with those partners, orientation and reflection activities, ABCS TA recruitment and support, and identifying University and community resources that will contribute to the success of ABCS research and teaching. These will be carried out by this staff member and by staff and students supervised by this staff member.

This position meets regularly with ABCS faculty, teaching assistants and university-assisted community school partners to help ensure mutually beneficial collaboration between university and community partners. This position works closely with Penn students who are working with faculty to develop new ABCS courses. Other activities include coordinating the ABCS course development grants program and ABCS awards for faculty, students and partners.

The ABCS Research and Program Coordinator also works with faculty and students to develop ABCS collaborations within and across departments and Penn schools to help create integrated ABCS projects and programs of study. This includes coordinating thematic ABCS faculty seminars and ad hoc working groups. Additionally, this position facilitates collaboration among Netter Center programs and among other Penn programs and centers that work with the Netter Center and ABCS courses.

This position oversees the Netter Center's Student Advisory Board, and helps coordinate the Netter Center's Faculty Advisory Board's activities. This position maintains extensive files and records on ABCS courses and recruits and manages interns, work-study students, and volunteers to support ABCS programs. The ABCS Research and Program Coordinator oversees the student support budget and works closely with senior staff and the business office on the overall all financial management of ABCS- related activities.

Qualifications: A Bachelor's Degree and 1 year to 2 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required working with Academically Based Community Service (ABCS) programs, including as a student, with faculty teaching ABCS, and as an ABCS program partner. This experience is necessary to help advise on the development and implementation of current ABCS courses and developing new ones. Experience working with a college or university service learning program office. Experience working with an evaluation program. Understanding of pedagogies associated with ABCS, such service-learning, problem-based learning, and peer-assisted education. Ability to work with wide range of people and communities. Budget management skills. A team player with excellent writing, organizational and computer skills who is able to work a flexible schedule and has a deep interest in university-community academic partnerships.
