This staff position is a skilled mentor capable of providing guidance to all students passionate about pursuing a health professions career and possesses a skill set necessary to assist biology majors in finding and obtaining career preparation opportunities.  This position will report to both the Academic Advising Center and Hart Career Center with support provided by the Chair of the Biology Department.


  • Provides academic advising for all students on the career path toward medicine and other pre-professional programs in allied health fields
  • Instructs, guides, and counsels students in their coursework, professional school application process, and appropriate options for a “gap year” experience
  • Assists pre-health students in arranging healthcare “shadow” and volunteer experiences, practicums, and externships and internships
  • Works collaboratively with faculty, students, offices, and programs across campus, local agencies (public or private), and IWU alumni to establish experiential learning opportunities and career preparation programs for biology majors
  • Serves as IWU liaison for professional and graduate schools offering health professions programs and facilitates campus visits through recruitment fairs, classroom presentations, and information sessions
  • Provides educational programming, workshops, and specialized networking events throughout the academic year appropriate for pre-health career students and students passionate about biology careers
  • Works collaboratively with the admissions office and other relevant campus offices to maintain and improve a strong reputation for the pre-health program for prospective students and parents, attends recruitment events, and meets with prospective students as needed
  • Develops and updates appropriate handouts and web-based resources for pre-professional health careers graduate programs


  • Possesses a master’s degree in counseling, counseling psychology, college student personnel, or related science field is required
  • Exhibits excellent interpersonal and written communication, organizational, and analytical skills
  • Demonstrates the ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Is able to maintain confidentiality, discretion, and professionalism
  • Has experience to develop, conduct and analyze outcome assessment data
  • Is proficient in computer skills, such as database management, spreadsheets, and automated recruitment software
  • Has experience working with students interested in pursuing pre-health professional programs and/or the field of biology
  • Preference will be given to individuals with three to five years of prior academic advising and/or career services experience, as well as prior experience working with a diverse student population
