Assembly Weld Engineer
The Weld Engineer (WE) will provide technical welding expertise to all assigned personnel. The WE is responsible for evaluating and making recommendations regarding current and new customer programs as it relates to weld assembly processing, tooling, and equipment. This position will also develop and implement training a program for skilled trades associates in robotic and hand Projection, Spot and GMAW welding techniques and procedures and in the troubleshooting and repair of robotic and manual welding equipment. Furthermore, the WE will develop and implement work instructions for manual weld, and repair requirements. The WE will develop, implement and maintain parameters for weld schedules and test procedures in coordination with the Ultra sound/Destruct department. The WE will participate in APQP/Cosma CPMP processes relating to the design of weld assembly work cells and tooling and will recommend design changes to improve quality, reliability, and productivity of welding processes.
The WE will also develop and implement documents and procedures for validation of welding equipment and processes to meet or exceed customer specifications and provide guidance and input for the setup and programming of robots for welding best practices. The WE will promote continual improvement in weld quality and weld processes and maintain weld drawings and Weld Master schedules database. The WE will take full ownership of all root cause investigations on weld related defects and lead the team to full resolution and lessons learned.
•Follow and enforce all plant safety rules and policies
•Understand and promote Magna's philosophies and Employee's Charter.
•Works with minimal supervision.
•Sets up equipment and machinery by installing and testing weld tips, fixtures, tooling and other parts as required.
•Cleans and changes weld tips and performs general maintenance on equipment to ensure acceptable working conditions and start-up requirements.
•Responsible for installing, maintaining and upkeep of welding programs and stepper programs.
•Monitors quality of welds, trained in all phases of weld resistance troubleshooting.
•Make necessary adjustments to parts and machinery to ensure proper production run.
•Basic robotics programming skills.
•Basic electrical circuit troubleshooting.
•Responsible for keeping adequate quantities of all resistance welding supplies and ordering when necessary (e.g. new tips, tip holders, cables and water tubes).
•Duties also include detailing to Supervisors necessary modifications to be made to existing equipment to maximize ease of operation and increased machine performance.
•Maintain safety standards of equipment and work area and perform all duties in a safe manner in accordance with the safety policies of Drive.
•Provides technical support for a specific welding system during the introduction of new models.
•Ensures proper welding documentation delivery form the Original Equipment Manufacturer
•Proactively supports/initiates corrective measures to weld control issues.
•Ensure new parts get ordered or returned unused part back to the correct stock location.
•Update verification forms when needed.
•Practices good housekeeping on the shop floor and in assembly cells.
•Perform other duties as required
Knowledge and Education
•High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED)
•Weld Engineering Degree or equivalent
•Minimum 3 - 5 years experience in an automotive welding engineering, design, and program development environment
•Extensive knowledge of automotive welding and fabrication processes
•Proficiency with Advanced Product Quality Planning methods
•Strong computer skills are required
•Knowledge in OSHA safety requirements
•Strong experience / knowledge in robotic programming for welding processes, preferably using Fanuc or MotoMan equipment
•Prior experience in weld laboratory duties

Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
