The Institute of Materials Science is seeking applicants for a full-time Financial Assistant 1 (UCP 1) for the University of Connecticut. The Institute of Materials Science is an interdisciplinary Institute with a threefold mission fostering education, research and outreach in all areas of the materials sciences. Under the direction of the Assistant Finance Director of the Institute, the incumbent will be closely involved in the financial and grant-reporting transactions for the Institute's activities. This position will provide 50% support to a prestigious MURI-ONR award and the other 50% to the overall Institute of Materials Science by keeping a complete set of records of financial transactions for various units, along with providing faculty support in all aspects of grant administration.

Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Provide fiscal, technical and administrative support to the MURI-ONR award.
  2. Analyze and verify details of transactions on grant and contract accounts such as invoices, requisitions and other disbursements in conjunction with university and college policies and procedures.
  3. Provide statistical information on various expenditures and compile regular reports pertinent to the operation of each faculty member utilizing electronic spreadsheets and databases.
  4. Provide data for proposal development, prepares budget/budget justifications, completes standard forms and monitors expenditures for compliance with approved budget limits and applicable policies.
  5. Prepares, process and monitors, tracks, interprets and maintains all fiscal records for multiple accounts for faculty including payroll records, purchasing, travel, and other disbursements to ensure compliance within federal, state and university policies.
  6. Resolve outstanding issues on grant and contract accounts including follow up on problems to assure timely and accurate completion of work.
  7. Independently prepare correspondence related to pre- and post-award issues.
  8. Serve as main liaison between UConn units, faculty, and external sponsors.
  9. Review post-award effort reports and managed effort certification process for assigned departments.
  10. Maintain files and grant management database.
  11. Perform related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications
  1. Associates degree in accounting or bookkeeping.
  2. Two years' experience in accounting or bookkeeping.

Preferred Qualifications
  1. Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, business or related field.
  2. Experience working in a higher education setting.
  3. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  4. Demonstrated customer service skills.
  5. Excellent computer skills including experience with Microsoft programs.

Appointment Terms

This is a full time position for one year, with annual renewals. This position is expected to have a duration through July 31, 2020, with a possible extension until July 31, 2022.
