Business Intelligence and Training Analyst Description IRDS (Institutional Research & Decision Support) is looking for a knowledgeable, people-oriented analyst to train and support users for SIRIS, Stanford's student analytics reporting system (Student Integrated Reporting Information System). This position will help shape development of future phases of the system itself, as well as shape users' experience of the system. This is a 2-year fixed term position, with a possibility of extension.

Job Purpose:
Under general direction, the Business Intelligence and Training Analyst will be responsible for supporting the user community for the SIRIS student analytics reporting tool. This includes developing and delivering a training program for users, consulting with users to understand their needs and facilitate their adoption of new tools, and communicating pertinent news and information about changes to the system.

Working with stakeholders to identify information and reporting needs, the incumbent will also serve as a liaison to the SIRIS student analytics team, suggesting data sources and presentation mechanisms appropriate to tasks and audiences, and delivering clear, accurate results related to student data and the teaching mission of the university. In addition, the Business Intelligence and Training Analyst will participate in a wide assortment of data analyses including analyzing data for outlier cases, testing system implemented logic for accuracy, troubleshooting discrepancies and other issues, etc.

The Business Intelligence and Training Analyst will report to the Director of Decision Support and Business Intelligence in the Office of Institutional Research and Decision Support (IR&DS).

Core Duties:

  • Develop training plan and new instructional materials as needed, and improve existing training materials, including an online training module.
  • Schedule and teach classes, collect feedback, adjust instruction as needed in response to feedback.
  • Document key aspects of the data, reports and usage.
  • Respond to help requests from users, design mock-up reports and meet with users to help refine their needs.
  • Provide leadership by building a community of practice where SIRIS users can exchange knowledge and best practices.
  • Foster and strengthen relationships with key stakeholders to increase awareness and adoption of SIRIS across campus.
  • Develop and maintain additional communication tools to keep users informed and educated, such as website, newsletter, and job aids.
  • Perform fit-gap analysis, assessing the extent to which the new reporting system is meeting user needs and identifying areas for improvement; represent the user community when design decisions are being made, including decisions about appropriate authority levels.
  • Conduct data analysis in support of testing system data consistency and accuracy, including troubleshooting root cause of a discrepancy, resolving reported issues, inspecting data for anomalies or outlier cases, etc.
  • Drive collection of new data and the refinement of existing data sources; apply and use algorithms or other advanced techniques to accomplish this.
  • Recommend ways to apply the data; assure reliable and consistent data are maintained and available for both ad hoc and longitudinal inquiries.
  • Collaborate with other organizations to identify and integrate user defined data.

Qualifications Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree and five years of relevant experience with student data or combination of education and relevant experience. Experience at Stanford or other research university a plus.
  • Experience in the collection, management, analyses and presentation of student enrollment, admissions and/or curricular data in a university setting.
  • Experience with teaching and developing instructional materials. Knowledge of instructional design principles, techniques, and tools is a plus.
  • Experience in data analysis, root cause analysis and excellent problem solving and analytical thinking capabilities.
  • Experience with the PeopleSoft or comparable enterprise-wide student administration system.
  • Experience with query-based reporting tools such as Hyperion Brio, SQL, SAP Business Objects or Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition (OBIEE).

  • Knowledge of student data in a research university setting, including knowledge of the business uses and sensitivity of student data.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle sensitive data responsibly.
  • Highly effective interpersonal skills along with strong written and verbal skills, ability to eectively convey information positively to a wide variety of audiences.
  • Ability to build and maintain effective relationships that improve internal operations within and outside of the immediate team.
  • Ability to work independently yet also coordinate effectively in a team environment.
  • Ability to review business processes and translate into BI reporting and analysis solutions.
  • Ability to conduct careful, accurate, and resourceful analysis of data.
  • Knowledge of, or willingness to learn on-line training applications (such as Captivate or Storyline) sufficient to support existing online training, and develop additional online training modules.

Physical Requirements:
  • Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks.
  • Frequently sitting.
  • Occasionally stand/walk.
  • Rarely writing by hand; lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
