Job Title Laboratory Manager, Engineering
The Laboratory Manager, Engineering oversees the operations and maintenance of the bioengineering laboratory facilities and equipment. Serves as safety officer, assists students in the laboratory, and supports faculty members with engineering courses in the classroom setting.
Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in Bioengineering, Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, or closely related field.
Two years of laboratory operations experience.
Master's degree from an accredited institution in Bioengineering, Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, or closely related field.
Familiarity with engineering principles, circuits, software configuration, signals and systems, computer networks, and instrumentation.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge of software engineering and/or biomedical engineering principles and laboratories.
Knowledge of purchasing and inventory control principles and methods.
Knowledge and proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) applications.
Working knowledge of practical teaching or instructional methods and techniques.
Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the safety requirements and operational standards of an engineering teaching laboratory.
Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
Strong organizational skills and an ability to prioritize and complete simultaneous projects with minimal supervision.
Skilled at offering advice and criticism in a constructive manner.
Ability to manage computer networks and appropriately manage software licenses.
Ability to appropriately interface with both hardware and software, applying firmware updates and maintaining compatibility as necessary.
Ability to maintain, calibrate and potentially repair computerized equipment and instrumentation as necessary.
Ability to utilize, calibrate, configure and/or troubleshoot laboratory testing systems and instruments.
Ability to develop and deliver effective training presentations and programs to large and small audiences.
Ability to develop standard operating procedures, safety protocols, and policy manuals.
Ability to establish and maintain a good rapport with university faculty, staff, students, and vendors.
Ability to collaborate and work effectively within a diverse community and willing to contribute to a team effort.
Ability to think critically and creatively, have a high standard of integrity, and be motivated to incorporate best practices into the organizational structure.

Salary Range $54,000
Essential Job Duties
•Oversees the day to day operations and maintenance of the bioengineering laboratory facilities and equipment in compliance with recognized safety requirements and protocols. Instructs others in the safe use of laboratory equipment.
•Assists students in the lab. Provides guidance in learning objectives and functional operation of equipment.
•Collaborates with faculty to ensure that all students receive adequate lab instruction, exposure to skills, and skills experience. Contributes to academic coursework by providing specialized guidance in the development of laboratory curriculum.
•Maintains laboratory for instruction of students, including ordering and stocking supplies and equipment, keeping lab neat and orderly, maintaining equipment or arranging for repairs and maintenance of facilities and equipment.
•Utilizes electronic record keeping to maintain the inventory records for analytical equipment, optical test, data acquisition and control, and specialized or computerized equipment and instrumentation.
•Maintains computer networks, computerized hardware and software licenses, ensuring compatibility through firmware and software updates.
•Maintains, calibrates, and repairs computerized equipment and instrumentation including research and teaching equipment, printers and large-format plotters
•Oversees the supervision, coordination, training and maintenance of the rapid prototyping facilities within Holmes Hall.
•Oversees the supervision, coordination, training and maintenance of the augmented / virtual reality (VIPER) laboratory.
•Coordinates the development of a safety program for all laboratory preparation areas, specialized scientific, or hazardous materials stores.
•Researches and makes recommendations for the purchase of new equipment, modifications to or replacement of current equipment.
•Coordinates activities involved with procuring goods and services. Negotiates with vendors to obtain optimum quality, cost, and terms. Orders and maintains all laboratory supplies, equipment and services. Reconciles all invoices and approves them for payment.
•Serves as liaison to Facilities Management, Environmental Health & Safety, and University Police departments for maintenance of the material safety data sheets.
•Assists with sponsorship of the various engineering clubs and other extracurricular activities of the engineering programs.
•Assists with scheduling of laboratory facilities.
•Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
