Assistant/Associate Professor and Director of the Writing Center
Miami University invites applications for an assistant or associate professor of English who will serve as Director of the Writing Center that is located within the Roger and Joyce Howe Center for Writing Excellence (HCWE). The position would begin July 2018. The Writing Center Director will hold a tenure-line faculty position in the Department of English.
This position includes administrative responsibilities as well as teaching, research, and service. The director will be expected to maintain an active scholarly agenda and will teach a 3-credit cross-listed undergraduate and graduate consultant training course each year as part of a negotiable teaching load. The Writing Center directorship is a 5-year appointment with the opportunity for renewal.
The Director will also recruit, hire, train, and manage students who consult in person and online; supervise a staff manager and doctoral-level graduate student assistant; provide support and training for faculty and consultants working with multilingual writers; consider and implement ways to enhance diversity and inclusion in the writing center consultant and student populations; encourage and mentor undergraduate research among writing center consultants; and create and implement appropriate assessments of training and consultations. The Writing Center Director will work closely with the HCWE Director to consider innovative ways to support faculty who teach writing in the disciplines.
Required: Doctorate in Rhetoric and Composition or related field by start date; a scholarly agenda focused on writing center work; a record of effective teaching; and demonstrated commitment to mentoring undergraduate and graduate students. To be appointed to the rank of associate professor with tenure, the successful candidate would need to demonstrate a record of high quality teaching and a series of peer-reviewed publications or a book.
Consideration will be given to candidates with at least two years’ experience in writing center administration; scholarship related to writing center work; experience mentoring undergraduate student researchers; experience with multilingual writers; and demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion in writing center work.
The HCWE is generously funded through a $10.4 million endowment from Roger and Joyce Howe (http://miamioh.edu/hcwe). It includes not only the writing center, but also extensive writing-across-the-curriculum programs and support. Reporting to the Director of the HCWE for administrative work, the Writing Center Director will take primary responsibility for the activities of the writing center, and assist the HCWE Director in moving forward the overall HCWE mission of ensuring that Miami supports its students in developing as effective writers in college and beyond. The Writing Center directorship is a 5-year appointment with the opportunity for renewal. The Department of English offers undergraduate degrees in Creative Writing, Linguistics, Literature, and Professional Writing; BA/MA degrees in Literature and Creative Writing; MAs in Composition and Rhetoric, Creative Writing, and Literature; a low residency MFA in Creative Writing; PhDs in Literature and Composition and Rhetoric; and an MAT through the Ohio Writing Project.
