The Department of Neurological Surgery at the University of Virginia seeks a Research Associate. The incumbent will work in the laboratory of Dr. Yashar Kalani. The Kalani lab researches neurovascular conditions such as stroke, aneurysm and vascular malformations in animals and humans, including identification of RNA biomarkers and understanding neural stem cells and regeneration.
Qualified candidates must have a doctoral degree in a field related to neuroscience and experience with neuroscience scientific research methods and statistical analyses, including the collection, analysis, and interpretation of statistical data. Preferred experience includes experience in stem cell research, biomarker discovery, and/or Next Generation Sequencing. Candidates are expected to be highly motivated, possess an ability to troubleshoot, work well independently and with others, and also possess the ability to mentor junior lab members.
Incumbent performs animal experiments and surgical procedures, provides animal care and handling, collects data and samples, and assists in the management and operations of the lab. Additional responsibilities include: manuscript preparation of research findings, literature and manuscript review, presentations at meetings, attending and presenting at seminars, mentoring of junior lab members, and preparation of grants.
