Boston University’s 17 Schools and Colleges require a specialized and hands-on approach to advancement. Staffed by local teams that report dually to the individual school or college Dean, as well as central Development and Alumni Relations, these eighteen individuals work to organize Dean’s Advisory boards as well as advance a wide-range of fundraising and alumni relations initiatives. These staff are highly collaborative on gifts and programmatic support, coordinating closely with leadership giving, alumni relations, planned giving and faculty.


The Development Associate is responsible for assisting the school-based development and alumni relations efforts while directly supporting the Assistant Vice President (AVP) and the Director of School Development (DOD)’s strategy and initiatives as part of the Campaign for Boston University. The Development Associate will provide programmatic and logistical support for Dean’s Advisory Boards and works directly with Board members. The Development Associate will also help advance the alumni relations and annual fund programming at the school level by serving as the coordinator for local and regional school-based alumni and parent events and assisting with the implementation of a multi-school strategy to solicit and steward annual fund leadership gifts. The Development Associate must work cooperatively with a wide variety of colleagues and external constituents, including University leadership, faculty, staff, and alumni, to help execute strategies and work toward overall development goals.

Assisting with all phases of planning and execution of the Dean’s Advisory Board events and communications for multiple schools and colleges at the university, including attendance at the meetings, the Development Associate will have direct contact with high-level donors, preparing and disseminating meeting materials, arranging faculty/student speakers, and working with outside vendors and managing
logistics. Tasks include, but are not limited to: booking space, catering, tracking registrations, running nametags, recruiting and staffing speakers, preparing collaterals (invites, speaker gifts, etc.), tracking event timelines, communicating with colleagues regarding events. This includes post event follow up and tracking, next steps and outreach. Each school/college hosts DAB meetings twice per year with a majority of the meetings taking place locally.

This position will also assist with all phases of planning and execution of school- based local and regional alumni and parent prospect events, including staffing the events. The Development Associate will plan, execute and staff school-based alumni board meetings as well as school-based Alumni Weekend events. Duties include event staffing and overseeing invitations, RSVPs, mailings, catering, signage, and pre-
and post-event communications. Communication with direct contact with alumni and parents, strategizing purposeful event content and executing all aspects of event management from invitation to follow-up is required.

The Development Associate will also assist with the development and implementation of a strategy to enhance the school-based annual fund and alumni relations efforts, including specific activities that increase donor participation, alumni engagement and stewardship, including collaborate with the development and alumni relations staff and execute the production of materials for specific school-based fundraising activities, and assist with the development, compilation and maintenance of various campaign reports that help to identify new annual fund leadership gift, major gift and principal gift prospects. This role will travel regionally to staff alumni/parent events; identify, solicit and steward annual fund leadership gifts prospects who may be alumni, parents and friends of Boston University.

This role will also coordinate stewardship moves management and tracking for major gift donors, including collaboration with AVP, DOD, leadership/principal gift officers and Office of Stewardship for every phase of stewardship, as well as serve as part of the team building the pipeline of major gift prospects by identifying and providing preliminary prospect and philanthropy research to DOD, including using Internet and other tools.

This position will also serve as the liaison with the annual giving team supporting school-based efforts including deans’ appeals, Giving Day, Loyalty Society, student telefund, and other related projects, as well as work with DevCom to produce materials that support the schools’ campaign priorities, including campaign one-pagers for school-based units.

QUALIFICATIONS Candidates must have three to five years experience, a bachelors degree is required. Additionally, written communications, analytical skills, collaboration, and project management skills are required. Strong computer, organizational and interpersonal skills are required, as well as the ability to prioritize the workload.
