Position Summary

The research technician will conduct greenhouse and growth chamber experiments; participate in field work projects in Michigan; extract DNA and RNA from plant samples; conducts controlled crosses between plants; organize equipment and supplies in a molecular lab; organize germplasm collections; follows established procedures in performing tests and assays in order to generate and record data for later analysis by other researchers; assists in compiling test results for future composition of reports, publications and presentation by other researchers; operates, maintains, monitors research instruments and equipment; orders supplies and equipment in order to build and maintain inventories; prepares solutions for molecular biological applications; supervises and instructs students in performance of basic laboratory techniques; cleans, prepares and stores glassware and materials used in experiments by washing.

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in the specific field of research employment or other related field; up to six months of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in basic research techniques in the specific or related field; word processing, spreadsheet; database and/or desktop publishing software; presentation software; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The job may require the appropriate pesticide applicator's registration/ certification and/or experience working with potentially dangerous research animals.

Desired Qualifications

Previous experience working in a research laboratory, basic knowledge of plant biology and genetics; ability to balance work effectively across multiple different projects; organizational skills; ability to work with others.

Description of End Date

This position is funded for one year from date of hire with possible extension contingent upon funding renewal.
