The Program in City Planning in the School of Public Affairs is seeking an experienced faculty member at the assistant professor level for a Fall 2018 appointment. This position requires expertise to teach courses in at least one of the following areas: housing policy & community development, housing affordability & homelessness, urban history, or research methods.

Given the interdisciplinary nature of our School, teaching and contributing to our collaborative programs is desirable: Master of Criminal Justice and Criminology; Master in Public Administration; Online MPA (College of Extended Studies); and Latin American Studies.

In addition to the substantive teaching areas described above, it is highly desirable for successful candidates to have the ability to teach or conduct research in one or more of the following areas: comparative regional and local government, public administration from an international perspective, and/or non-profit organizations.  Willingness to teach online and distance courses in our Masters of Public Administration is also desirable.

To be in a better position to serve a fast growing and highly diverse student body, and to fulfill the University’s commitment to promoting diversity and excellence on our campus, we actively seek candidates demonstrating experience working with or mentoring students from under-represented communities, as well as those whose research interests involve or integrate understanding of under-represented populations and communities.

Successful candidates must be able to teach at both undergraduate and graduate levels. Professional activities and publications in the applicant's area(s) of expertise are required for promotion.


Applicants must have a doctoral degree in city planning or a closely related field by the date of appointment. Candidates should have demonstrated evidence of research publications, and the potential for program development and grant writing ability, with clear leadership potential in each of these areas being an asset. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

School of Public Affairs

The School of Public Affairs in the College of Professional Studies and Fine Arts contains three programs: City Planning, Criminal Justice, and Public Administration; each offer a master’s degree. Criminal Justice and Public Administration also offer bachelor’s degrees with combined enrollment of over 1,200 students. The master’s degree in Public Administration is also offered with either a concentration in Criminal Justice or City Planning. The School's MPA degree is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration (NASPAA). The City Planning program is pursuing accreditation with the Planning Accreditation Board. The School of Public Affairs emphasizes excellence in teaching, research, and service to the community, the university, and the discipline. The MPA is ranked 4th in California by US News and World Report (2012), and 14th of 200 schools in North America by Eduniversal (2014) based on factors including graduate salaries and student satisfaction.
