Summary of Position:
The Infrastructure Architect is responsible for providing architectural guidance and oversight to ensure that systems are scalable, secure, highly available, operationally sound, and effectively meeting the needs of the university. This person will be heavily involved in the design and creation of shared client infrastructure, academic research computing solutions and services, and public/private cloud solutions.
The Infrastructure Architect will work closely with a diverse set of colleagues, including various infrastructure groups, product/development groups, and leadership to evaluate a variety of systems alternatives to meet business requirements while adhering to industry best practices.
The Infrastructure Architect is expected to share his/her broad knowledge of diverse technologies and facilitate/participate in project meetings involving all aspects of technology that rely on technology infrastructure.
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or closely related degree from an appropriately accredited institution and four years of experience in operations analysis and design, systems programming, or closely related area; or a Bachelor’s degree from an appropriately accredited institution and five years of experience in operations analysis and design, systems programming or closely related area; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experienced in the creation and evaluation of business cases (hardware/software costs) for multiple projects and writing of proposals and RFP documents
Ability to identify and engage at the right level with both technical and university leadership
Leverages a broad set of professional and technical skills to deliver the right solution and understands the impact of technology across campus when making decisions

Able to effectively communicate – written and oral – to students, faculty, and staff at all levels in the organization

Ability to manage and lead multiple projects concurrently
Demonstrated excellence in critical thinking to drill down quickly to root issues
Knowledge of CISCO network and technologies
Demonstrated ability and knowledge of various virtualization technologies (VMware, Citrix, HyperV, etc.)
Demonstrated ability and extensive knowledge of public/private cloud technologies, specifically migrating various systems from on premise implementations to cloud infrastructure/services
Web server and application server administration experience
Knowledge of shared storage architecture including storage tiering, synchronous and asynchronous replication, and fiber channel and FCoE protocols in traditional, converged, and hyper-converged models
Experience with multiple single sign-on and federated identity management technologies
Virtual Desktop Infrastructure experience
CISCO certifications CCNA, CCIE, Linux and UNIX
Architecture certification (TOGAF, CITA, EACOE, Certified SOA Architect, etc.)
Prefer a minimum of five years’ related experience

The Department of Infrastructure & Operations Services is responsible for the planning, installation, management and support of the central computing and data storage infrastructure which enables faculty, staff and students to utilize UNCW’s information technology resources for teaching, research, public service, administration and information management. The department, headed by an executive director, is based in Information Technology Services in Business Affairs and is under the administrative purview of the Chief Information Officer.
