Salisbury University (SU) invites nominations and applications for the position of Dean of the Samuel W. and Marilyn C. Seidel School of Education.
Salisbury University is an exceptional public regional comprehensive institution located on Maryland's scenic Lower Eastern Shore. The city of Salisbury is midway between the Atlantic Ocean beaches and the Chesapeake Bay, two to three hours from Washington, Baltimore, Philadelphia, and Norfolk. Founded in 1925 as a normal school, SU today is one of the twelve campuses comprising the University System of Maryland, offering 56 Bachelor's and Master's degrees in the arts, humanities, social sciences, math and sciences, education, allied health, social work, and business, as well as doctoral degrees in education (literacy) and nursing practice. All four SU schools are endowed. SU has been cited nationally as one of the top ten public regional universities in the North according to U.S. News & World Report and has also been recognized by the Princeton Review and Kiplinger's magazines. SU has approximately 8,600 students and 388 full-time instructional faculty and is an institution that values diversity in its faculty, staff, and student body.
Primary Job Duties: This is an outstanding opportunity to become part of a dynamic university academic leadership team. The Dean of the Seidel School is the chief academic and administrative officer of a school with 34 full-time faculty members supporting three undergraduate majors (Early Childhood, Elementary and Physical Education), tracks leading to certification in secondary or K-12 education in subject areas across the arts and sciences, and graduate programs leading to M.Ed., M.A.T. and Ed.D. degrees. Our teacher preparation programs, collectively the second largest in the state, are nationally accredited, and we have won national recognition for our work in Professional Development Schools. The School currently serves about 680 undergraduate education students and 210 graduate students. The Seidel Dean is a key member of the University's academic leadership team and must provide visionary leadership for education-related programs, requiring thorough knowledge of issues and best practices in teacher preparation programs, P-12 instruction and the scholarship of the discipline.
Minimum Qualifications: Terminal degree from a regionally accredited or internationally recognized institution in Education or a related discipline, a record of teaching and research that would warrant appointment as a full professor, greater than ten years of experience as a faculty member and three to five years of administrative experience at the level of department chair or above, including work with accreditation processes.
We are seeking a leader with demonstrated performance and leadership in academia and education who actively supports interdisciplinary collaboration among faculty and students and is strongly committed to teaching and research excellence at all levels, as well as effective collaboration with the local education community.
Must be detail oriented and have excellent interpersonal, customer service, organization and planning, prioritization, problem solving, follow through, time management, and oral and written communication skills. Also, must be flexible and possess the ability to successfully handle multiple tasks/projects simultaneously and work well under pressure, independently, and in a team-oriented environment. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) is required.
Preferred Qualifications: P-12 teaching experience is desirable.
