Position Summary

The Department of Sociology is looking for an annual (12-month) Academic Specialist— Advisor/Instructor.  This position is 75% advising and 25% teaching.

In addition to teaching one undergraduate course for SOC each Academic Year, the Academic Specialist will perform a range of academic recruitment, advising, and curricular assessment duties during the Annual Year.  The Academic Specialist will:

  • assist with recruitment and yield efforts in SOC and will work closely with the Office of Admissions and CSS on all recruitment and matriculation initiatives;

  • plan, implement, and participate in campus programs aimed at the recruitment and matriculation of prospective students including the Green and White Days, Alumni Distinguished Scholarship Competition, Spartan Club, and other University recruitment functions;

  • participate in the organization, implementation, and advising of the Academic Orientation Program;

  • coordinate with the CSS Director of Student Affairs and Services;

  • advise SOC undergraduate students in SOC on matters regarding the SOC, CSS, and MSU undergraduate curricula;

  • coordinate the experiential learning requirement for all SOC majors;           

  • assist with academic record maintenance and degree conferrals;    

  • serve as SOC liaison to MSU Career Services;

  • advise SOC undergraduate students on graduate school, professional school, and career preparation;

  • gather, analyze and report on data from MSU's EAB Student Success Dashboard/Markers; and

  • perform other duties as assigned in support of SOC, including assisting with general administrative responsibilities.

Minimum Requirements
  • An MA/MS in Sociology is required.
  • Applicants must demonstrate commitment to high-quality academic advising.
  • Excellent written, oral, and presentation communication skills are essential.
  • Strong organizational skills with an emphasis on long-term planning for recruitment and outreach are vital to the success of the applicant.
  • Applicants must demonstrate commitment to high-quality undergraduate education via scholarly teaching.
Desired Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in Sociology is preferred.
  • Experience in a student affairs/services program, such as admissions, orientation, and/or academic advising.
  • Experience in teaching writing-intensive, discussion-based courses using innovative, experimental teaching techniques is encouraged.

The teaching portfolio should document the candidate’s interest, creativity, and proficiency in pedagogy.  Applicants must include a 1-2 page statement of teaching philosophy, explaining how you put your philosophy into practice (preferably using examples in courses you have taught), and how you plan to implement, improve, and expand on your ideas and techniques.  The teaching portfolio also must include each of the following materials from the last 1-2 courses taught:

  • course syllabus;

  • selected course exercises to promote student learning;

  • writing assignments or exams used to assess student learning; and

  • results of formal course/teaching evaluations.
