Program Manager

The Institute for Sustainability, Energy and Environment,, at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is seeking a Program Manager to be responsible for coordination and organization of newly funded multi-themed center and for overall proposal development within iSEE.


Manage project changes to the scope of work, scheduling, resource allocations and staffing levels.

Monitor budget and payroll for themes.

Supervise the laboratory manager including task assignment, ongoing performance management with coaching and feedback, career development planning, leave/travel approval and conducting annual performance evaluation.

Coordinate reporting and metric tracking with the themes and ensure that reporting deadlines are met. Prepare and submit required reports.

Schedule meetings of Advisory and Governance Boards, annual research retreats and sponsor site visits.

Develop and execute communication plans in partnership with the Institute's Communications Coordinator in order to properly engage all stakeholders.

Serve as point of contact between the partnering institutions and theme leaders.

Coordinate data management across all partners.

Lead teams of scientists and staff in the preparation of funding applications.

Organize and manage project teams which involves fostering collaborations, convening and facilitating meetings, creating action plans and timelines, establishing goals, roles and responsibilities.

Plan and draft non-technical sections of proposals, as well as edit drafts produced by others; develop budgets and budget justifications; assist with uploading proposals to various sponsor sites.

Analyze funding announcement objectives and ensure these are addressed in the proposal process.



Master's degree in Business, Business Administration or a science related field. Alternate degree fields will be considered/accepted if accompanied by equivalent experience, depending on nature and depth of experience as it relates to this position.

Required qualifications:

Eight or more years of relevant project management experience. Demonstrated writing experience via coursework or professional contributions. Data management experience. Experience in justifying and initiating projects and programs (including budgeting and timeline development). Strong working knowledge of advanced project management practices. Excellent communication skills and public outreach techniques. Proactive and self-motivated and the ability to effectively manage multiple projects/themes/ assignments simultaneously. Deadline-driven and ability to prioritize tasks. Demonstrated commitment to diversity. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a wide variety of constituents. Demonstrated computer competency with intermediate to advanced computer skills.

Preferred qualifications:

Three or more years of project management experience at a research institution or academic setting. Program or project management experience in a complex work environment. Experience proofreading or editing technical reports or other documents.

Proposed start date: As soon as possible after closing date.

Salary: Commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Appointment Status: Regular 100% academic professional appointment / 12-month service basis. Benefit-eligible position.
